What you describe in your last sentence is exactly my issue. I noticed some front axle gear oil loss through the c/v gaskets. I'm going to start there.
The green coolant temp sensor in the head was unplugged.... it was an easy fix to plug it back in and the van is still running perfectly.

The van was running fine- including the s/c before the swap. The head gasket let go on the freeway which provided a dramatic steam cleaning to the internals and the exhaust.... hence the swap. ...
