Have you checked the starter and flexplate / flywheel for broken teeth?
Maybe it's just not hooking up?
After putting my dash back together following my auto to 5spd swap, I realized that I'm not getting the backlighting on the cluster.
One of the things that I thought could be the culprit is this...
The driveshaft wasn't too tough to remove. You'll need some 14mm (I think) sockets and wrenches, maybe a longer bar if they're really on tight. Once the bolts are out it should just pop out. ...
I'm almost wrapping up an auto to manual swap on my 4wd, and removing the trans was basically the easiest part. I would not hesitate to move/remove in the future, so don't feel too intimidated by...
I used the Copper Nickel e-z bend line sold at the auto parts store. My first couple attempts at flaring didn't go too well as I cranked the tool to high hell and split the tubing. After backing...
In keeping with the clutch bleeding theme, I'm having tangentially related issues.
I'm nearing the end of a 5speed swap that included making a new clutch line from the clutch master, through the...
Unfortunately, I do not.
I also had an instance of hooking up the battery in reverse. Fixed all the connections, still had issues. It turned out that I blew a cap in the ECM. Replaced with an...
Excellent. Thanks for the confirmation!
A question about re-installing the RMS carrier;
I picked up a new paper gasket that goes between the rear of the engine and the RMS carrier. I also used some FIPG on the bottom of the carrier...
Totally weird. It does seem odd that the larger circular opening on my mount faces the short side of the plate. I'll have to double check and confirm that I didn't mix up parts by mistake.
The...
I've also been hunting for a replacement. I wound up visiting my local rubber company and had them fit a new piece of rubber to the old mount. Next, I'll drill out the rubber, fit the metal sleeve...
Does the van crank and not ignite/turn over? Does it sound like it wants to? Or do you turn the key and nothing happens?
If you're getting it to crank, I'd suspect something other than a blown...
I did this with my first van. Fried the fusible link and definitely fried the ECU.
I replaced the fusible link and the van would run, but barely. I traced it back to the ECU. Pulled it out,...
I'm undertaking an Auto to 5speed swap.
I've pulled the auto trans, which is toast, but was wondering if anyone needs parts from it before it gets scrapped. The oil cooler lines are not...
I'd also try to rule out bad starter unit (while it's still connected to the van) v bad wiring by sending POS voltage directly to the starter.
If it doesn't turn this way, I'd suspect something...
I'm interested in the DS mirror and the rearview. Sending a PM!
Thanks for the info!
I searched pretty good and did not find the mating connector, so I guess it just isn't there. The manual did outline the part to disconnect in the engine removal section as...
Recently picked up an 89 Auto 4x4, non running.
I replaced the igniter and ignition/distributor coil and started putting the cover back on and noticed a wire that did not have a match. I can't...
I purchased some replacement lock cores from RockAuto or eBay or something along those lines.
They were super easy to put in once you took the door panel out. As a bonus, the key that unlocked...
Definitely interested in this option.
I've often thought about cutting an access hatch for the sender unit and pump. I already have a bunch of other holes in the van, so why not a few more?
...
Hey Reinhardt
I have a good condition 2WD fan shroud. DM me if you'd like it!
Checked fusible links?
ECU is in the door pillar at the left shoulder of the driver. Remove hardware for the seatbelt and fish it out.
The factory service manual is also much more descriptive...
The secondary drain plug on the engine side isn't too bad. Mine had all the wrench flats rounded completely off and it still came off easily with some vicegrips.
Only one way to find out though...
What about skipping trying to remove the broken bolt and welding threaded rod onto of the broken bit.
So instead of using a bolt you just thread a nut on?
I have an electrical wiring diagram leftover from my '85.
$5 shipped in the US.
PM me for email address and we'll do some paypal.
Just like this one.

I just put an order in for a few. In the meantime, the van when from cranking and not starting to starting with no problem, which is a plus.
I also picked up one of these in an attempt to flare...
Any online sources for the banjo line?
I'd like to replicate the Harbor Freight testing scenario, but don't know of any willing donor vans.
This one is online for a truck, and another for a...
I went through the same thing, down to the 'well this should be easy' sentiment.
I followed the manual for each step and I recall it being pretty straightforward. I skipped the SST and just used...
Do all the fuses check out? I recall having toasted or removed (then forgot to replace) an ignition fuse or a starting fuse...
Can you push / bump start / pop the clutch? Not sure if this will...
I picked mine up from RockAuto. I have an 87, but by the looks of things, they are similar. While the banjo fitting and threaded end worked, it wasn't a perfect fit, but close enough that I haven't...
Thanks for the input folks!
I'm mostly likely going with the BFGs, so definitely nice to have a good opinion there.
I'll post some photos when they mount up.
Well, I'm at the point of needing new tires for my 87 4wd.
There's a chance that I'll be purchasing another van, (2wd,) in the near future.
I'm leaning towards some 195 75r14's for the 4wd...
Tim's Previa Heater Core Mod:
http://www.toyotavantech.com/forum/showthread.php?2759-Cooling-system-Mods
I also did something similar, though I pulled the rear heater from the van and remounted...
Currently, I'm seeing a voltage of about 11.7 switched on, regardless of actually running. It was definitely higher, but I think I've beat up the battery a bit while trying to figure this out.
I...
I've been looking over this document : http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/alt_bwoh.pdf
If I wanted to rewire the alternator and bypass some of the existing fuses/switches, it looks like it shouldn't...
Hey Folks,
Trying to sort out a no charge no lights scenario. I've read through this thread and the associated ones and I have a few questions regarding testing.
To test for the above voltage...
i took my rear heater core out and plumbed it back in the front front of the van for some extra cooling power. in the process, i took all the lines and hoses for the rear heater off as well. now i...
So far they seem to be working out pretty well. To be honest, I don't have much of a basis for comparison. The ride is still a bit bouncy, but definitely better than what was on there. I went with...
If I were just a little closer, I'd be all over this!
I'd review this first. Then I'd probably do a full coolant flush with special attention to the front heater core, also checking heater hoses along the way and replacing the ones that seem...
I have an extra 89 shop manual around.
$15 + whatever shipping comes to, though I would imagine less that $10.
Cover is hanging on, the electrical diagram pages in the back have been folded in...
While diagnosing a bad ground, I once installed the battery backwards.
I replaced the fusible links, got the van to start and run, but with symptoms that sound similar to yours.
I pulled the...
no problem!
feel free to send me a couple Gansett's to show your appreciation!
Recently got around to putting the new shocks in.
I picked them up from http://www.toyotapartsoverstock.com/ . They took a bit to get here, but I wasn't exactly in a hurry. The old rubber on...
I believe so!
I've had the battery disconnected for a bit, reconnected, confirmed that the code was not there, drove around, checked to find the code back.
A little progress here...
No noticeable vacuum leaks, new 02 sensor, air valve ok, not sure what exactly the thermostat sensor is...
I also found this page in the manual for the '87. I also...
It seems most aftermarket antenna masts come with adapters to fit the piece that holds the coax onto the van.
If mount to the van looks good, and the cable going to the stereo looks good, just...
So I've been having a rough idle issue...
When the van is cold, the idle will hang around 7-8oo, but feel pretty rough. When I reach normal temp, the idle jumps up to about 1000. After driving...
