Lots of snow in my valley lately and I have a few questions about the operation of my LE's 4wd. The autolock hubs engage and the van runs like a tank in 4wd. The hubs also disengage when I take it out of 4wd, but only after I back up 20 ft or so, which I understand is SOP for vehicles of this vintage. I also notice that I need to shift from gear to gear very very slowly, or risk a loud bang as the transfer case engages. Also, I get the occasional same noise when I turn sharply in 4wd.
I remember my 1980 datsun 4x4 and it's 4wd system was by no means perfected yet either. Should my 4wd system run tight and not produce any weird noises or were 4x4 sytems of that era just kinda of wonky in general? I have enough practice now that while on some drives it doesn't produce any noises at all (no sharp turning, very slow shifting) Also, I only engage 4wd while in P. I use it in D but keep my speed to 50mph. It works great, it just occasionally makes that noise. I guess I am asking, how does the 4wd system operate and how am I supposed to treat it (waiting before shifting, recommended distance to back up to disengage hubs etc..)
Sorry such basic operation questions. Thanks in advance...
