View Full Version : Intermittent (and now always) power window failure

I've had this intermittent problem for a few years, where the power window would work fine for weeks (months?), then one day it wouldn't go back up. Passenger side window works just fine, just not the drivers.

My usual "fix" was to not worry about it much, as usually the next morning it would go back up just fine.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when it went down and has never been able to come back up.

Thinking it might be the master control switch, I removed it and cleaned it all up but no luck. I then bought a new (used) one, and that didn't fix it.

Today I took the side door panels off, and one thing I did notice is a single faint click from the motor area when I activate the window switch, and also when I let up on the switch. Same sound whether I try lowering the window or raising it. No motor running or straining or humming sound.

I do have one theory...

Two facts: This thing used to "fix itself" if I just left the car sit overnight. Some power window motors have a heat sensor to detect if the motor is straining, and hence when to shut off.

Theory: Said sensor has slowly been failing, and would eventually "cool off" enough to start working again in the past. But now it's completely failed and the motor thinks it's under load all the time, so won't power on. Even if it's not temperature, it's whatever is telling that motor, "OK ENOUGH" when it reaches the limit is still thinking it's limited.

Conclusion: Replace the motor and see if that fixes it.

Any thoughts before I go drop $45+ on a new motor?

I would put a test light across the motor leads to verify it's getting power to the motor. If the light lights up for both up & down, but the motor doesn't spin, then it's a bad motor. If the light doesn't come on, then you'll need to trace the circuit backwards to find the fault. Another way to test the motor would be to jump 12V directly to the motor. If a known good power source won't make it spin, then you've just verified again the motor is shot. If the motor works with power jumped to it, then at least you can roll the window back up. Tim
