Luckily I am near Austin where I have lots of friends. So I have a place to replace it. Anyone in central Texas area have a diff they wanna sell me? 91 RWD. Not the all-trac, though I believe the diffs are the same, and I carry a lot of weight in the back constantly so I need the 4.3 gears. The junkyard has a few and Ima pull one tomorrow, but I thought I would check here first.

One friend suggested to take the diff out of a dually Toyota hilux RV conversion! Maybe someday later I will experiment with that...

the previa uses the 7" ring gear... you can get it off the late 80s/early 90s hilux & 4runners... front diff

So did mine. The spare van (93 rwd 5 speed) I bought 5 years ago with 214K miles on it had been run with little or no fluid in the rear diff. I was told by the guy who bought it to flip it that the diff had practically no oil in it. The van whined badly from back there, and after about 5k miles started a high frequency loud clicking. Time to look into it.

Here it is. Doesn't look too bad.

Oh, oopsie. The pinion gear has some problems.

Even on the part that looks better the teeth are broken at the back.

This is the F282 Axle/Differential code, which has the 7.5" ring gear with 43 teeth and a pinion gear with 10 teeth for a ratio of 4.3. As I mentioned, the bad one is out of my 93 rwd 5 speed, and the replacement diff came from a 92 automatic. They are the same. My 91 awd 5 speed also has the F282 diff. It seems like the manual and automatic diffs are the same up until the model became supercharged.

All naturally aspirated Previas have 4.3:1 diffs; all supercharged Previas are 3.73:1. 5 speed transmission or automatic; 2wd or AllTrac doesn't matter. Blower = 3.73; sucker = 4.3. That's it.
