Hi,
What mileage do the fuel pumps usually fail on Previa's? I'm thinking of replacing to avoid being stranded some day, since you don't usually get a warning.
Manual says to adjust Valves every 60,000 miles. What mileage point has anyone seen the clearances change enough to need re-shimming for correct clearances?

Unless you're hearing valve noise, I would not worry about valve adjustment. If/when head gets removed/reinstalled for any other reason, I would recommend doing a valve adjust then (my personal opinion).

Unless you're having fuel pressure issues, I would not worry about replacing the fuel pump. Typically they go until they stop.............and that could be beyond 500k miles. Unless you replace with a new OEM pump, it's likely a new pump might not be as reliable as an original one with lots of miles. Of course, an OEM pump would not be cheap. Unless you have some reason not to trust it, it's better to just leave it be. Tim

Recently I did a valve adjustment on my '91 5 speed. 210k miles and first time the valve cover has ever come off this rig. Sadly neglected, I know.
All the intake clearances were great, .007s and .008s. The exhausts were another story... one at .012, two at .010 and the rest at .008. (spec is .010-.014).
I understand tight clearances are more damaging to the engine than loose, and they don't audibly advertise their condition. I'm glad I checked and adjusted mine. I bet some of them were already out of spec by 150k. Besides, taking the cover off, rotating the engine and measuring is pretty easy. It's only if things are out of spec that you have to decide whether to do anything more.
