Ok, I have a 87 4wd cargo van with no interior. Need to quiet it down as it kinda like driving around in a tin can; i.e. noisy. What have other folks done to combat the noise?
I was thinking about covering the front floor and engine hump with dynamat-like product and then cover the rear floor and partially up the sides with Monstaliner. Not sure if I will cover the rear with carpet or just the front area.
thanks Josh

Not a 1st gen Toyota cargo van but I attempted the beginnings of this kind of thing with my Previa before I wrecked it earlier this year. There are a lot of ways you can go about dampening road noise and generally trying to improve the acoustics inside of a vehicle. You can spend a lot of money on materials, or you can do it cheap and still make the project quite effective...either way it helps to understand the physics of what's causing the noise, and what exactly you want to accomplish. The website sounddeadenershowdown.com (https://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com) is a good place to start reading.

I removed the interior of my van and was going to rebuild it as a camper van. I knew I wanted to put insulation in so before doing that I figured I would try to take care of the noise that was coming from the bare metal walls of the van after I had removed all of the trim. The most accessible way to start taking care of that is with CLD (constrained layer dampening) tiles. This is the material that I used: https://www.amazon.com/KnuKonceptz-Knoise-Sound-Deadener-52-5sq/dp/B009KXFAGM

Here's some pics of what I did, it definitely helped the road noise/vibrations just having them on those bare walls with nothing else. The bubble wrap seen in the photos has nothing to do with sound dampening, that was going to be a first layer of insulation from the outside heat/cold. I took copious notes on the whole sound dampening thing, they are kind of scattered but if you would like I would be happy to PM them to you

If the CLD tiles work well (or perhaps if they don't work very well and you want to try other avenues), you can go a step further and experiment with a combination of closed-cell foam and Mass Loaded Vinyl along the inner body panels of the vehicle to create a barrier that theoretically blocks airborne sound vibrations. It's very effective when installed properly. Mass loaded vinyl can get expensive in the quantities needed to treat larger vans like ours, and it will add a significant amount of weight to the vehicle. Occasionally though you can find sellers on eBay who are offloading their excess material, that's where I got mine, though I never got around to installing it before my Previa died.
