View Full Version : intermediate steering shaft problem
When i turn the steeringwheel when the car is stationary or parking the vehicle, the steeringwheel bumps like it's hitting something..
When i turn the wheel to complete lock.. Saying 0% is left and 100% right and 50% is center, it's bumping once in the 25% zone. (or 75% zone to the right)
I checked PS box and the fluid looks okay and the PS works normally.
It does this only when parking or stationary turning the wheels but not on normal daily driving where the steeringwheel is mostly in the center.
Found the cause.. It's the intermediate steering shaft.. Any ideas how to fix it? Can it be just greased up and hope for the best?
I guess it's not a serviceable part then.. So if you get clunking when steering, you're better off scrapping the vehicle.

Have you checked your front end steering/suspension components? There is allot of potential for steering noise and thumping there? Anywho, here is a shot of steering column. How did you conclude that the intermediate shaft is being problem? Not much to it.

Seen one on EBAY not too long ago.
actually that picture helped a lot.. It only showed a tube under the steeringwheel and counldn't remove it cause you'd need to remove the whole steeringwheel assembly.. But by the look of the picture, the intermediate steeringshaft is under the vehicle.. Gotta jack it up and check underneath..
The symptom is:
Vehicle stationary or moving very slowly, when steering at full lock to the side, it bumps the steeringwheel like someone hit it with a hammer right to the center..
So when i steer left, bump bump.. Then steer right, bump bump, bump bump. Then i go straight and again, bump bump.
Doesn't affect driving at all, doesn't bump when turning in traffic.. Only does it when i'm parking the car or stationary.

It's in that tube. You will have to pull steering column. You check ball joints etc with crowbar? Steering gear rack ends? Outer tie rods? Really allot under there to clunk and thump. Even struts...have you had anyone in previa steering while you get underneath to isolate noises?

Oh.. if it's in that tube, that's really poor from toyotas part.. Manufacturing a stupid tube like that and you can't open it in anyway.. I kinda want to just break it to get access to it.. Why didn't they have a scoop of some sort that you can remove.. I guess i'll just drive with the clunk.. If it's not an easy fix then it's not worth the hassle. If it breaks then i have 2 cars waiting to take it's place. If i crash, insurance will take care of it.
