Hello everyone,

I need some help in locating the transmission temp sensor inmy 2wd 93 Previa 2wd. I have already replaced the coolant temp sensor and thecold start sensor/switch. I replaced the transmission and there is no tempsensor located on it. The trans temp sensor is a single wire sensor and Icannot locate it. Any help is much appreciated.

Here is a diagram from Toyota and part number/ cost reference. Im wondering if this sensor is hidden up on the back of the motor infront of the bell housing of the transmission?

Locating the transmission temp sensor on my 2wd 1993 Previa LE 2TZFE seems to be becoming a wild goose chase? I have not been able to spot the sensor on all the pictures of the JDM engines or A46DE transmissions that I have been browsing? Also, the sensor is not noted anywhere on the engine schematic in my chilton manual, however either is the cold start switch and I know that exists. I'm hoping somebody here has found this Transmission temp sensor and replaced it in the past and can lend me some knowledge? Could it be inside the transmission, seems like it should be an external sensor by the looks of the design?

Blake

Also,

I believe picture above with the sensor circled in red to be the Knock Sensor?

Maybe Toyota only put these on some models of Previa? Looks like this question may go unresolved here? If anybody has ever replaced this, please let me know the location yours was located at? I did find a picture of an Estima that looks to have one by the PNRDL switch. My 93 does not have this option. Any knowledge is much appreciated. I did order a Toyota OEM service manual, Electrical manual and A46DE manual. Hopefully these publications will help shed some light on the issue?

I searched through my factory service manual, and couldn't find any mention of that sensor either. It is connected to the the oil cooling lines, but what it is, I cannot say.

Thank you for the reply. I was having an issue with thePrevia switching in and out of overdrive once the van / transmission was hot. It also seemed sloppy/clunky in the drive line at times, mostly during low speed neighborhood driving. I chalked it up to u-joint play and or play in the thirdmember. When I grabbed the driveshaft and turned it while parked and in gear, I could get very little movement? I decided to change the coolant temp sensor and reset the code 22. After that I could not get the O/D issue to duplicate.I had ordered a new TPS, so I decided to change that out as well a few days later. While changing the TPS I noticed that the IAC solenoid/switch connector was glued in place. After removing the connector, it was discovered that the IAC solenoid/switch was broken in the connector lock area. I believe the IAC switch still worked as it tested to spec, but the connection was suspect and could cause issues. I had a spare throttle body I pulled from a 1995 superchargerPrevia, and low and behold it had the same unbroken solenoid/switch on it. Itested it at 20.1 ohms and 20.3 ohms from the B+ terminal as directed by themanual. I installed the replacement IAC while under the van. I am happy to report with fingers crossed that the van is no longer sloppy/clunky and the overdrive is working as designed. I learned along the way while wrenching and studying, that the Previa is built with an ECT transmission and depends on these sensors to work and function at its best. As far as the transmission temp sensor goes, my belief is that my Previa does not utilize one and I spent $65.00 for no good reason.

Now the 93 Previa has:
A swapped rear axle assembly from a 1995 2TZFZE
A remanufactured transmission
New coolant temp sensor
New cold start timing switch/sensor
New TPS sensor
Replaced IAC solenoid/Switch
New Grommet on the distributer
New BMW SAD couplers
A vacuumed and R132a charged A/C system
New tires and shocks
Full timing and tune-up job
I’m going to run it on a long drive soon and am hoping forfull resolution.

In the spirit of sharing all known information, I sourced an official OEM 1993 Toyota factory service manual, Transmission service manual, and wiring systems book. I am so glad to have all of this information, I may never have to ask a question here again :wnk: The trans temp sensor is only applicable to the A46DF (4WD) transmission on Previa's.

Best regards,

Blake
