My thermostat stopped working the other day. Stuck closed so the van overheated. When I got the new one it became obvious that the old one was a little different!

The c-clip holding the secondary spring was missing, and the cap fell off into the water pump turning a simple job into a much more involved one to take the water pump out and remove the debris. You don't want to have to do this if it is not necessary..

It was the original thermostat on a 91 previa with 226K miles.
Replacing the thermostat is very easy in the previa if there are no complications.
Moral of this story is change your thermostat as a maintenance item, maybe every 10 years/100K if it has not already been done more frequently.
I never did find the c-clip.
