Just trying to find the baseline of how slow our 2C-ts are.

I'd say my Townace is the slowest car I've owned or driven. I get passed by similar year VW Vanagons on the highway.

I also owned a 1980 Mercedes 300D (non turbo diesel). It's been quite a few years but that might be a fair match for the Townace :/

The upside though:

I find the van pretty good to drive around town and great in highway traffic cause it sits high and has giant mirrors. The fuel economy is almost as good as my prius on a long trip. It's got pretty good torque for what it is and it's geared nice and low for climbing around in 4wd.

I just wish my top speed was better. Last time i drove from Los Angeles to SF it took a while.

On the way there it took me about 8 hours to go 368 miles. I averaged 46mph on hwy 101. No traffic just me sitting there in the van. I filled up when i left and barely made it the whole way. Not sure how big the tank is. 12 gallons?

On the way home it took me 2 days cause i stopped at Pismo beach half way to tear around in the sand dunes:)

0-60 in my Mercedes used to take about 45 seconds. I'll time the van haha

I don’t push it past 70/75mph but can sustain that for a while. And usually about 45mph up steep hills on the highway.

My hiace cruises flat at 105kmh, barely goes 120kmh and chugs up the pass at 45khm. I can pass going downhill

Been driving for a week now.
195/70/14 tires, '93 LiteAce 2CT, Auto
@3k RPMs running about 100KPH, @ 3,200 hitting about 110KPH. Roughly flat highway.
My wife has a 2014 Nissan Versa and this van beats it 0-60. Zero to anything really. The van is a step up from her car, which is great since she will be driving it half the time.

The stock tire size is 205/70/14. When these tires run thin, I will upgrade to correct size. Then my speedo will be accurate. :?:

Ah, and currently getting 20MPG

I should not have hijacked that diesel alternator thread with my MPH question...

So I'm doping those reply posts in here.

Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, I'm still driving it, every day that I carry the mail. It is also my main driver.

With 205/70R14 tires, the van will cruise 88 KPH (55 MPH) at about 3,000 RPM. Not sure about elsewhere, typical speeds in Japan and Okinawa top out at 80 KPM, about 50 MPH. It will run 70 at less than 3,500 RPM but, I don't like taking it on the interstate.

This has been my experience with the 2-CT more-or-less, too. But after the motor is good and warm, an hour of 70-80km/h, it will make 90-100 real easy at just shy of 3800. Maybe if there were a US gearing kit for the OD or a 6sp transmission...

But the engine is just a hummy buzzbomb dream-ride at 80km/h; it feels like its running on pure air. But is actually getting 35mpg.

Yeah, no inter-state for me neither.

I'm still regularly getting 18-20MPG running just shy of 100KPH on highway, a little over 3K RPM's. I did put the stock tire size back on 205/70/14.
9402

story as a warning, I was trying to keep speed(60mph) up a hill once and the passing gear dropped in and the RPMs went passed 4K, and about half way up the hill I hear the worst screeching / squealing noise ever, scared the junk out of me. :wall: I promptly let off the throttle and of course made it up the hill at a tortes speed of 45mph.

Made me want to put on a *rev limiter* so it never passes 4k RPM's again. Still wondering how to do this besides just letting off the throttle. After reading some posts in here it has lead me to believe it was the turbo that made that horrific squealing noise. I cant wait to replace/repair the turbo and then straight pipe the exhaust back, for nice flow. I hope at least...

I keep hearing about people getting this 30+MPG, but this is not my experience, but I am running highway speeds 60+ everywhere. :?:

My 94 TownAce with the 3ct is almost "zippy" compared to my 89 with a 3yeu gas engine. I can move with traffic at lights, accelerate onto the freeway in a reasonable manner, and cruise at 75. It even goes 50 up moderate hills. I've been pretty pleased with it, and it's making me disappointed on the 89!

I've averaged 20 mpg too, which is 4 more than the 89.

When I first purchased my van it was definitely pretty damn slow. Couple that with the stock "speed chime" and freeway cruising was mildly frustrating. My van serves as my main form of transportation and my road tripping machine (in the last 3 months it's gone from Mexico to Canada and back, done 2 trips to the Bonneville Salt Flats, as well as a few smaller road trips) so making it comfortable on the freeway was a main priority of mine. My first upgrade was to switch from the 27" all terrain tires the van came with to 28" all terrains. This dropped freeway cruising RPM's to a little more acceptable range (I still plan on going to 30" tires in the future to drop RPM's even more) when trying to keep up with modern interstate highway traffic.

The next upgrade that I made was fabricating a better flowing exhaust. I had some 2.5" stainless steel exhaust tubing and a Magnaflow straight through muffler laying around from other projects so I used that to make a side exit exhaust system. This gave a noticeable bump in power as well as improving fuel mileage and lowering EGT. IMO, this should be the first upgrade for anybody who has one of these diesel vans.

The last major modification that I made was fitting an intercooler. This was a pretty major project. I removed the rear HVAC system a while back to simplify coolant plumbing and loose so unneeded weight. This made a nice spot for fitting the intercooler and keeping the intake piping nice and short. I purchase an aftermarket intercooler for a Renault 5 GT because it was compact and should support the power levels of the 2CT nicely. The main downside of locating the intercoooler in the rear HVAC location is airflow. To remedy this I fitted a small fan to provide airflow through the intercooler. The first trip that I took after installing the intercooler was a trip over the Sierras. I noticed that I was able to keep up with traffic on long steep grades much more easily. EGT's also dropped a little.

With the above modifications I can easily cruise at 70 mph and achieve ~25 mpg. If I slow down to 65 mph, mileage increases to 28 mpg. I'm hoping with a few more modification I can get cruising speed up to 75 mph and increase fuel efficiency.

I can post some pictures of the exhaust and intercooler if anybody is interested.

Wow, I really thought the diesels did better than that.

My 87, 5 speed, 4wd with a 4ye gas engine gets 22 mpg consistently with mixed driving. That's with 27" tires and a not so light foot. Up hills I can easily get to 50-60 mph in third gear, and many times I will pull hills in 4th gear. I can cruise straights at 75 all day long.

Around town it does great... I would equate it to a pickup/ 4runner with the 22re or similar set up.

After driving the turbo 4ye for a few years now there's no way I'd ever daily drive a Toyota van with stock power levels again, gas or diesel.

My MPGs range from 17 (fully loaded pulling 1500 pound trailer in the mountains), to 31 (empty 65mph all highway). The MPGs vary significantly depending on how much time you spend driving in boost. I tend to have a heavy foot.

As far as power goes, at 10psi boost it's more than powerful enough, with a high 9 second 0 to 60. Impressive for a 2.2 liter pushrod engine pushing around 4200 pounds empty on 30" mud tires.

Turbo 4Y-MS3 is where it's at.

I really thought Diesels got better mpg....

My 87 4YE, gas fed consistently gets around 20 mpg in town, and 23-24 mpg on longer stretches.

It can cruise all day long at 70-75 mph and up hills in 3rd and 4th around 45-55 mph.

Yes please on those exhaust pics. The muffler on my new to me ‘91 LiteAce is in need of replacement, and the exhaust pipe isn’t in great shape to begin with (obvious bodged repairs) and a side dump exhaust is just what I think the van needs.

As requested, here are some pictures of the exhaust. It is 2.5" stainless steel. I reused the stock flange at the turbo elbow. The muffler is a Magnaflow straight through model that I had laying around. It exits just before the rear tire. It isn't loud and gave a noticeable increase in power and turbo spool-up.

Don't mind the dirt, it gets driven off road on a regular basis.

Thanks for that. That is very informative. That is exactly what I’m thinking will clean up my ratty stock exhaust. How well does that Magnaflow tuck up into the frame? Better clearance than the stock muffler in the back I presume.

Much better. It tucks up nicely and is barely noticeable when looking from the side. With all the other stuff that hangs down under these vans (gas tank, transfer case, etc) it's the least of my worries.

It sounds like the 2ct is a little less efficient than the 3ct?
Our 1996 Liteace with a 3ct (2.2liter turbo) never really drops below 30 MPG, and best tank, heavily loaded, was 34 mpg on 205-70r14 "enasave" tires strait off the boat from Japan. Since upgrading to Suzuki rims with 205-75/15 size, I suspect it has gotten better, but the wife has yet to let me get a good read on a tank(she doesn't push the button on fill ups!)
Things that can be done to improve it- bigger tires for lower RPMS- kill switch for engine off coasting, under body aerodynamics pan, intercooler(per above discussion- pretty major for us, but about 6% increase in efficiency from my research), mpguino. There is a lot of info on ecomodder forum about this.
Note that when calculating MPG's, you have to account for tire size alterations- my speedo is in KM/hr, which normally converts at 1.61 km:mile, but with the common alteration of 205-75/15 it is now converting at 1.5:1 so an indicated 75 km's/hour= 50 mph.

Acceleration- perfectly acceptable, comparable to a 22re, for sure. I have no complaints here.
Top speed- very poor- 65 on the highway is about max on stock tires. The 27" OD tire really helps, increasing speed about 7% at any given RPM. Acceleration still acceptable, and 4 low still crawls well for steep bouldered terrain. I think this is about the right balance for overall gear ratio. I don't know about you, but these narrow tall vans don't feel great above 65 mph anyway.
