I have the 4" thick shop manual, but seem to have misplaced it and can't find one in PDF form. Anyway, my front wheels have a little play in them. It drives like the steering dampener is worn out and I stopped by my buddy's shop and asked him what he thought. He jacked it up and there is some play in both front wheels. He believed that you could adjust the bearings in the front hub. I didn't say anything, because I was pretty sure that he was wrong, but was wondering if the front bearings are adjustable or should I look elsewhere for the problem?

I would drive:drive: outta there!!
I’m sure there’s some info on the forum regarding replacing wheel bearing, have you tried the search feature?

Not sure how many miles are on them, but it may be time to pull the locking hubs and wheel bearings apart for cleaning and regreasing. According to the manual, set the bearing preload at 43 ftlbs turn the hub a few rotations then loosen and tighten to a final torque of 11 ftlbs.

It all gets torqued on the bolt in the center of the hub?

It is adjustable, You just need the TST (Toyota Special Tool) # 911BFH.

The 4WD vans (auto or manual locking hub) have Timken type taper bearings. The wheel hub is held onto the spindle by 1 large nut followed by a locking ring and another large nut. You can google "remove toyota 4wd hub" and should come up with a few youtube videos of how to pull it apart.

AutoZone has a repair link on their site showing torque specs, pics, and explanations... I couldn't find my Previa shop CDS so was very thankful when replacing the SAD, front wheel bearings, calipers and rotors for all the specs! I had a machine shop press mine in with the seals for 80.00. Ordered aftermarket parts from Rockauto, picked up a new SAD from Tim :)
Thanks !!

and if you don't have that Toyota Special Service Tool, just go buy a 54mm deep socket and you'll be good to go.
No worries JDM, we all just thought you were being a little sarcastic!

And I think Carbonized is messing with us too, as that Toyota SST number looks a little suspect?
I think it may have something to do with big freakin hammers, but not sure.
It can be done with channel locks, but I can't figure out how to attach the torque wrench to mine, so I went with the proper socket instead.

Just remember there are two sets of torque specifications depending if you have auto hubs or manual hubs. I would just go ahead and replace the wheel bearings, it's not terribly hard but definitely a weekend job.
