View Full Version : Parting out 4x4 TV

Ohh it's true, it's damn true! I have secured another 4x4 van that was destined for the crusher. I drove down to Bisbee, AZ, for this beauty and, unfortunately for her, she got the worst of both worlds; Northeastern rust and Southern Arizona sun damage. The guy I bought it from had practically no knowledge on how he came to possess this van or what is wrong with it but insisted that the engine and drivetrain were good. Best I can tell, it was originally from Massachusetts, and eventually made its way out to the Southwest, where a decade-plus in the Arizona sun and some broken windows led to her being in the sad state she is in today. People before me had picked a few parts off it (alternator, air cleaner hose, battery) so I wasn't able to try to turn it over but the oil looked good so, unless someone locked the engine up, it *should* be salvageable. And with the odometer reading just short of 165,000 miles, she's barely broken in! Aside from the interior, which is horrid (I didn't even bother photographing it, that's how bad it is), the van is about 85% complete in all its 4x4 glory. Ok, I've talked enough, lets see what she looks like!

Now for anyone who remembers or anyone newer who has concerns about credibility/legitimacy, I have done this before (https://www.toyotavantech.com/forum/showthread.php?4494-PARTING-OUT-1989-4x4-TV), and dozens of parts made it out to other members here to help keep their vans on the road. I am truly indebted to this site and Tim for allowing such a community and database of information to exist, and as such a percentage of each sale will go towards site maintenance and server costs. I'm hoping everyone can tell that the vans I've been parting out are firmly in the "parts car" stage and don't think I'm cannibalizing restorable vans to make a quick buck. Preservation of these vans is the name of the game at this point, and this was worth much more in parts than it was in scrap.

BASIC INFO:
- 1987 4x4 Toyota Van LE (automatic)
- 164,xxx miles
- Model code: YR31LG-PQEA

RULES:
- Paypal or Venmo only
- PM or reply in thread with what part(s) you need and I'll respond as quickly as I can
- The body is shot so unless there is some plastic or some small trim pieces you need I wouldn't even bother asking to ship it.
- I do work full-time so it may take a week or so to pull the part you need.
- If the piece is too big/heavy/awkward to ship conventionally you must be willing to help me make appropriate arrangements.
- GLASS: I don't know how to ship it, but both sliders and door glass is good. I don't need it, so hopefully someone is willing to take it off my hands for next to nothing + a lot in shipping.

Unlike last time, I am at my permanent address, so I will have ample time to thoroughly part this thing out. Also, all parts are fair-game, including igniter, 4x4 auto radiator, sliding door handle, all the desirable stuff. I only needed a few parts off of this, which I'll note in the "sold/unavailable" post below.

Thanks for looking,

- Perry

Hey Perry

small items I would love to have are the latch and spring parts that are on the inside of the gas tank door flap . I have the release arm and cable etc but my body man lost the parts around the gas cap when he was painting it. It's the pressure spring attached to the vast and little black plastic bit that attaches to the cover/door.
thanks

I've gotten quite a few PMs in addition to the replies here, keep the requests coming! Work is hectic this week but I'm going to be wrenching on the van all day Saturday, I'm hoping to have pulled all requested parts and responded back to each member with pictures that evening.

Hi AD2101, thanks for offering these up on here!

I need the LH plastic lens cover shown here, but looks like cpginkpt may have already claimed it. I'll take the RH one if so and will make it work on the left.
8442

Also need the door pocket liner on the RH door shown here:
8443

These red reflector light covers. Both sides are cracked but driver's side is the worst (could use both sides though if not cracked):
8444

Need this RH orange side light cover:
8445

RH (passenger side) head lamp shown here:
8446

Front LH wiper nut cover if it's still there:
8447

OTHER PARTS NOT PICTURED:
I also need the RH tail light as mine is off of an older van with the 4 colors instead of 3. Also need RH arm rest off the passenger seat, or at least the foam. Mine has been totally destroyed. Also could use the ignition coil if it's still good. And if you still have the right rear quarter panel glass and can figure out shipping, I may be interested in that too if shipping isn't too crazy, since mine is pretty cracked.

Thanks again!

Ha! - well yes, actually the first 3 parts you asked for were also on my (cpg) list ;)....

I only need 1 of each tho, so we can split them as long as both are good ;)

I also have a right armrest if you need it - will dm you pics later today.

Ah cool, yeah I saw you needed the plastic door pocket/finger grip liner but on the driver's door, whereas I need the passenger side. Hopefully both are still good. I also only need the lens cover on the backup light on the hatch (light assembly is still good), so I think I can use the other side there.

Thanks for offering the arm rest; I'll check the pics once you send them. -Eric

PMs have been sent to everyone that has reached out to me, either through PM or in this thread, so check your inboxes!

A quick update;

This van is busted, I way over-estimated how "there" the van is. Nearly every piece of plastic was dry rotted or flat out broken, and this thing is as much rust as it is metal at this point. Even with this, I'm still just getting started. Anyways, time for more photos! This is how the van looks as of today:

8477

8478

8479

As you can see, I tossed, picked, and pulled a literal ton of parts, here are some of the more noteworthy parts I've snagged so far if anyone is interested:

8480

4x4 fan shroud (complete) willing to sell complete or just the bottom since that's usually the piece missing

8481

8482

Sliding door handle (no cracks)

8483

Igniter

8484

Throttle body

8485

Rear driver's side 4x4 mud flap

8486

Misc. front end lights and trim

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in ANY parts, not just what is shown.

I'd love to buy one or both of the rear center caps, if they are the same as the one in this photo - plastic, made to look like the front hubs (my van has manual front hubs, not sure if the back ones are the same on a 4wd with auto hubs). I couldn't quite see in any of the photos if they were present or not.

Thanks!

does this van van have the Aisin manual locking front hubs?

No, they're the finicky autolocking hubs.

In other news, the first paid for orders are boxed up and ready to ship, members who have already paid will get tracking information on Monday. I've had some more part requests so I'm hoping to get in contact with all of those people by this time Sunday but otherwise, keep the requests coming!

EDIT: Mods, do the posts automatically lock after a certain amount of time and you're unable to edit them? I can't edit my second post in this thread, which is to note which parts have been sold/junked in order to try to cut down on multiple requests and save time. Otherwise, I'll have to make a new post every time something sells, which ads to the clutter.

Yeah, unfortunately we had to do that. A few people (in the past) decided to remove technical content. :pissed:

I can't extend the edit time for the non-technical forums — one setting fits all. :wall: So you'll need to make a new post each time you have a new list of sold parts, unfortunately.

- All gas door parts
- Fan shroud
- Speedo cable and housing
- Windshield trim
- Hood latches
- Rear cigarette lighter
- Left rear back up light assembly

I'm replying to all PMs tonight and making room in my inbox so if we have business pending and I haven't gotten back to you, please message me! It's not intentional, there's been a lot of interest in parts so it's possible I may have missed a message.

So far, the parts sold off of this van have traveled a combined 8,917 miles from Tucson to their new homes and vans, which is a thousand miles greater than the diameter of Earth (7,917.5 mi)! And you thought you weren't going to learn anything today :LOL2:.

I want to get a couple more laps in around the planet before I pack it all up so keep the parts requests coming!

EDIT: For anyone who cares, that mileage is "as the crow flies." If we're actually counting each part hopping from distribution center to distribution center and actually being delivered, the miles traveled would be well over 10k by now.

Those 4x4 bits were some of the main reasons I bought this thing in the first place, so I'll be holding on to those for my stockpile of spare parts. Hopefully they'll turn up for you somewhere else soon.

Also, all PMs have been replied to. I'll probably start pivoting this to posting pictures of what's left as we've already put a really good dent into parting this thing out. Thanks and keep the requests coming!

Maybe the Brake booster/reservoir and what not. Anything that is plastic and in good shape...

Good idea, before I kick out the front windshield I plan on pulling the rest of the relays, electronics, and the plug-ends. If the van still has the steering bevel gear you should call the Stealership, give them the vin#

If so, that's a good unicorn part to keep/sell.

Four questions on the R&P: - EDIT - answered some of my own Q's

Will one fit the other but not vise versa, So is it OK one way, but not in the other direction? << Still an open Q
On the recall has it expired? - Edit the Edit - Surprisingly, it has NOT expired! - after 15 yrs they don't HAVE to honor it... (But can extend it)
What was the issue? The steering bevel gear assembly may have water contamination which could lead to rust/corrosion.
Was it all years & models, 84-89? Just 4WD 87-89? - Certainly my 87 4WD was recalled - Only recall it had though - Now to call Toyota dealer and see if they honor it.. toy recall site- 1986, 1987, 1988 MY Vans and Cargo Vans Steering Bevel Assembly. And YES, apparently they will honor it, - putting that to the test!

New Q: is this "Steering Bevel Gear assembly" the box under the steering column that turns the steering shaft back to the R&P? Edit: After review of the FSM and the van, apparently so.

And a Follow up on the Steering bevel Gear:

Parts are still available, they STILL honor the recall, I have an appt with the service Dept for a week from tomorrow!

Process is: Inspection to see what parts are needed. Order parts, (I suspect if no rust is observed they just replace any gasket needed) and then schedule the replacement - If it needs the box replaced, I'l bet that has to be shipped from Japan...

Summary from the Toyota web site: and again this is for the 86-88 vans.

May 30,1989
Manufacturer Recall Number K01
NHTSA Recall Number 89V089
Recall Status- Recall Incomplete
Summary - The steering bevel gear assembly may have water contamination which could lead to rust/corrosion.
Safety Risk - This could cause erratic steering, which could result in an accident.
Remedy - Replace steering bevel gear assembly; cover liquid gasket material with improved material.

Unfortunately both of those parts either sold or were broken. For what it's worth, the window regulators only differ depending on whether or not they're power or manual. Trim level will determine if the taillights are compatible or not.

How much would it cost to ship the rearmost driver side window? Also need the silver driver side body trim and the driver side headlight plastic (the piece to the left of the headlight.) Also outside sliding door and rear hatch handles but I know that's a goose chase.

Thanks so much!

Just for clarification are you in Vancouver WA or Vancouver BC, shipping international will not only be expensive but need customs paper work and duties.

BC, but I was thinking I'd likely have the stuff shipped to somewhere on your side of the border & go pick it up. Simpler / cheaper that way.

AD2101,

Are you pulling the auto tranny before sending it to get crushed?

Aww bummer someone called the cops!

8870

This slightly accelerates my plans with what remains of this thing, I guess tomorrow I break out the sawzall and have myself a day getting this as chopped up as possible. The end goal has always been to keep the drive train and power train together since that's where most of my desired parts are, so I was just going to cut the whole body off down to the floor as a rolling deck, tarp it up, and roll it into a corner of the property.

I mean it does look objectively terrible, but I really wish the reporting party would have just swung by and talked to me instead of running off to the cops. If it was an abandoned car I would get it but I've been actively working on this thing since I got it. Oh well, tis the times we live in now.

Wow some people can’t appreciate yard art!! You’ve done a great job dismantling that van, can’t wait to see engine and tranny pictures if you have the time to pull them out now that your on a time constraint!!

I really despise people being anonymous cops like that. They just don't understand that we are dealing in semi precious and rare parts!
Anyone that has seen parts disappear at this rate would know that this is a work in progress and the van would disappear soon.

It's definitely frustrating and IMO a little cowardly to go about it this way. Whenever I've had an issue or disagreement with a neighbor, I've always tried to address the matter with them directly first and only call the police as a last resort.

Anyways, I racked my brain over this problem for the better part of the weekend and over-complicated things, as I typically do. My first plan was to chop the body of the van until it was only about 2 feet tall (I still plan on doing this at some point), removing a portion of my side wall, moving it into a corner of the backyard, and mothballing it until I was ready to come back to it. I came up with similarly complicated ideas until I remembered I have AAA and a spare bay in my garage . I figured a truck with a stinger can pick up the front end, and simply back it into the garage much easier than I ever could since it has 2 flats and no longer steers.

I'll post one more update and then probably ask the mods to lock the thread since it's served it's purpose and everything left on the van is stuff I plan on keeping, at least for now. I do still have a grip of parts that no one has asked for but I feel are still worth something to someone, so I'll post another thread with just those parts.

Unfortunately, neither of the rear quarter panel panes of glass were good on this van :(: Good luck in your search.

I’m looking for front and rear drive shaft bolts, if you happen to remove that tranny and disconnect the drive shafts, if you don’t have use for the bolts and they are in good condition I could use those. Let me know if they’ll be available.

Thank you:thmbup:

I have 'em, I'll let you know when I pull the shafts (giggidy) and will make sure to hold onto the bolts for you.

Hey everyone!

With the city on my a** and running out of time, I opted for the most expensive tow-per-foot to get this thing into the garage. I still plan on pulling the engine, transmission and rear axle shafts sometime this summer but otherwise, consider this part out completed! I was proud of how we did at the conclusion on my last part out but you guys really showed up this time around and we picked this thing CLEAN, there's literally nothing left aside from the aforementioned parts I'm going to keep.

I would like to say thank you to Tim, Gwen, and JDM for this community and allowing me a platform to sell these parts, and I would especially like to say thank you to each member here who showed interest and/or bought parts from me. In addition to the PMs here, I got to talk to a lot of you guys via email, text, and phone and it's been an overwhelmingly positive experience talking about vans and things beyond that. I hope everyone is pleased with the parts they bought, pieces from this van went to well over a dozen different members so it's death will hopefully contribute to those vans staying on the road for years to come.

I was able to snag some other parts off of this van that I'll put up for sale, but I'll make a new thread with pictures of just those parts to (hopefully) minimize the confusion since I'm no longer pulling parts per request off of this van.

Here is the van in it's new home where it'll hang out for a couple months before I get around to picking the rest of it. A lot of hours went into this, and I'm honestly exhausted. It's been real but mods, it's time to lock her up!
