View Full Version : PARTING OUT: 1986 DX Van

TL;DR version. I'm parting out a van, pictures are at the bottom of this post. PM me or reply in the thread with a request.

Hey guys, I'm back with another parts van that I picked up in lovely Huachuca City, AZ a few weeks back. Brief backstory, the van was purchased by what I would describe as a hoarder and sat on one of his lots until he passed away, and then sat some more until I bought it from a family member and dragged it back to Tucson. It appears to have last been registered in 2003 and definitely feels like it has sat for that long. It also has a salvage title as it was involved in a pretty substantial collision on the passenger side that was not fixed very well. It has the unholy trifecta of damage; sun rot, former pack rat infestation, and (most frustratingly), sat for years with only tap water in the coolant lines. I'll respond to any requests made, but there are no interior trim or plastic parts I would feel good about reselling and a lot of the parts with metal coolant lines as corroded beyond use. There's still A TON of good parts on this, a few I've already pulled, cleaned, and catalogued at the end of this post.

I bought the van for $350 and spent another $100 in food, gas, and the trailer rental to get it home so I'm in it for about $460. I'm not looking to get rich, I'd be content with making my money back as there are only *a few* parts I need off of this van; namely the windshield, rear quarter panel glass, and the two taillights. Everything else, including "the good stuff" (igniter, sliding door handle, etc) is ready to find a new home in a new van.

If you're still reading, here (https://www.toyotavantech.com/forum/showthread.php?4494-PARTING-OUT-1989-4x4-TV) and here (https://www.toyotavantech.com/forum/showthread.php?6452-Parting-out-4x4-TV) are my other threads here where I have done this, in case anyone was questioning whether I'm legit or not :) I never ask for top end ebay prices from forum members but I'm not looking to rip myself off either. I'll be holding onto the van for about 2 months before it goes to the scraper so let me know what you need and we'll take from there.

Hi. I'm looking for an exhaust clamp that supports the twin pipe header just below and aft of the exhaust manifold. Here's a pic from a parts catalog. It's the part on the right labeled 17410E Clamp. Please let me know if you have it. Thanks, Stuart10091

Thanks . . .

Hi again. I'd also like to see if you have the metal brackets for the rear stereo speakers. These speakers are located in the upper rear corners of the body pillars on either side of the rear hatch opening. There should be a total of 4 brackets.. (2 per side). Parts catalogs show it as part of the speaker assembly, but they are attached to the speakers with screws. Here's a pic.. Thanks again.

Do you have the following:
* spider for the climate control with cables?
* arm rest for the front passenger seat
* windshield molding at the top of the windshield inside the vehicle.
* intact wiring harness (that may come at the very end).
* Ignition switch inside the steering column (with key and complete wires going all the way through the steering column.
* rear safety belt cover for the rear bench seat (they are mounted on the inside walls of the van).
* Engine Ignitor

You wouldn't happen to have any plastic trim pieces for the bases of the middle row captains chairs on some LE models?

No, this particular van didn't come with captain chairs.

Thanks!

This part appears salvageable but does have some dry rot. Unless you're really hard up for it honestly almost any other van would have this part in better condition. If you're still interested let me know I'll pull the part and take pictures.

It is a 2wd, I guess I never mentioned that in my rambling in the first post

Send me a PM once you get a list together, also dumb it down for me as much as you can because I'm having a hard time picturing either of those parts you named.

Ahh ok that explains a little bit of it. This van doesn't have fog lights so none of that stuff is present on the van. Regarding the box, I sent you a PM.

I am in need of the entire rear door, if we could make this happen. I'm in Atlanta, GA.

I'm guessing you are still parting this out.

I would be interested in the transmission (praying that wasn't why this van was parked), torque converter and driver-side front signal (the one in the bumper).
I'd probably have to fly out and deal with this - but it's well worth it as I am looking at having to rebuild, otherwise.

let me know if you can help me.

regards!

I need an overdrive switch that is on the auto gear shifter. You can cut the blue and white wires. But try not to disassemble the switch. Thanks. 865-679-3432. David Thomas. If the harnesses to the sensors on the coolant neck are decent, price them also.

No you don't, not unless you're a masochist of the highest order lol.

I will try to hold onto this van until the end of May before it goes away so there's still time to put in part requests!

I posted before how the company working on my transmission [60 year old company] owner died and the company closed overnight and threw away my parts. I payed way too much and ordered another trans from a parting yard and shipped it but only came with one mounting bracket and one shift linkage grommet and the seller just says "not my problem". Then I found a pick n pull with a van and verified by phone but they crushed it literally the day before I got there.

This whole process is a year old now and the shop that has my van stored is out of patience...

Now id really love a mounting bracket for the transmission on the passenger side which could be easy to get and If you are going to drop the trans anyway I'd also love shift linkage grommets the right size... If not I can do without those.

I could use the fuel filler door; the exterior windshield trim; the front grill "Toyota" name plate; the front passenger side amber turn signal and parking light lens; the rubber air tube between the throttle chamber and the air filter box; maybe others, send me some prices and I'll see what I can afford;

Honestly these parts are all still available new through RockAuto at prices I wouldn't be able to compete with. I think that would be better anyways than saving pennies on the dollar on used brake components.

Good luck!

Hello hello - bummer about the tap water.... I'm pretty sure that's what led to all of my coolant system woes too, but we're making progress.

Do you think the throttle body is salvageable if I'm willing to put in the elbow grease/de-rusting work...? Is it super corroded? How about the heater core.... my guess is no but thought I'd check.

I'd also be interested in hearing what the coolant system and radiator look like to you since it sounds like a more advanced decline than what I'm dealing with and I'd love to get ahead of any future corrosion issues I may encounter since these vans have a li'l trouble staying cool in the first place...

The entire cooling system was compromised, none of it was salvageable and it all got tossed, throttle body included. Good luck in your search.

In other news, the van is off to the afterlife. As before, I've held onto some parts that I know will be requested down the line, but otherwise mods please lock this thread, its a wrap!

Some pictures of the van in it's final, sad state before the scrapper came to put her out of her misery.

Nice job picking the van apart!! Yes the thread will be closed.

One last parts request if it’s still available-

Both rear hatch hinges and bolts look like they’re still there, if you have the time can you please pull them.

Thank you
