MasterAce 2CT Black Smoke, low acceleration

So have the van running now and seems to be okay on idle though a little lumpy.
I drove it to a diesel specialist to get checked out and it blew a lot of black smoke on the way especially under high revs. It also seemed to have no power at low revs and struggled on hills.
The diesel specialist said he didn't know the engine but could here it had compression issues when he tested it with the glow plug electrics disconnected.
I have also read this could be the egr valve. So tested disconnecting the vacuum pipe but it made no difference.
I'm going to try a blanking plate next weekend. And hope this sorts it.
But otherwise I dread I may have to take the engine apart and start looking around.

Any thoughts here on what this might be?

It supposedly ran fine 5 years ago but that was 5 years ago and it's been sat for a long time I'm surprised I got it running in the first place.

It might just be dumping fuel because of a poor fuel/air mix. Maybe try checking the air intake, filters, etc and check the injectors or maybe try and use an injector cleaner. Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm not that experienced. From what I understand about diesels is that black smoke is typically indicative of too much fuel being injected into the cylinders. I'm learning more about these engines the longer I have my van.

Yeah i blanked the egr and still had an issue. Then got myself a compression tester and checked the compression.
found that the furthest cylinder to the back of the engine, opposite side to the belts, read less than half as much as all the others. Bummer.

so my next step is to drop the engine out rehone the cylinder and replace the rings. As well as adding a new head gasket set whilst I’m at it. Any advice on this would be very appreciated haha.

I wonder what caused that cylinder/rings to fail.

Rings aren't the only reason for bad compression. It could be a bad valve or camshaft or even a leaky injector among other things. It may be worth doing a little more diagnosing before a teardown. Injectors will need to be tested with a diesel specific pop tester. If one is leaking bad enough to cause low compression then the oil may smell like diesel fuel too.
