Speedometer and odometer both stoped working

1989 4x4 Vanwagon manual transmission.

The speedometer/odometer/miles counter all stopped working.

Any ideas?

could it be the speed sensor or a wiring issue?

Your speedometer is cable driven. Check the drive cable for damage particularly the 90 degree fitting at the transfer case.

I had the same issue and it turned out my speedometer cable was shot. If you are in PDX I highly recommend this place https://www.speedometerserviceportland.com/. Steve charged my $60 for a new cable and he made it in a day. Now my Speedo and odo both work!
