Hi All,
My previous post regarding a ping-y rattle at very slight throttle openings has been resolved. The engine would make a bit of a rashy ping that went away as soon as you gave it some real throttle. Because this is my first diesel, I did not know if this was normal or deleterious to the engine--some people on forums claim this is normal , but the noise was rubbing me the wrong way. Since the motor seems to be in very good overall condtion , I elected to take it to Dean's Auto Care in Portland, OR. ( I usually do not go to the mechanic even under pain of death...) They checked the pump timing (OK) and then told me that its likely that the injectors are not shutting off properly --as they described it "drippy" which results in an over-fueling ping. Maybe not destructive , but not normal.
Well , $1368 later I have new OEM nozzles on the injectors and the ping is gone. I had to spend the money to see what normal was  . Next time I would take care of it myself. Dean's was not cheap , but they did a good job and seemed to be very responsible. Their shop was clean and did not give me the impression of the anchor stowage on a pirate ship. They even had a copy of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra on the waiting room table, so I felt this was a good omen.
So , with rebuilt Denso Pump and new OEM nozzles , I am ready to trundle and rattle down the highway to California for my first real travel in the Tachikoma. 12890
