Hi All,
I had two issues closely related. When I got my Townace , the PO's mechanic ( TNA Auto in Portland OR.) had installed Gates 15385 fan belts on the alternator. When I redid the timing belt and related parts , I bought new belts including a pair of 15385. WELL , you can't get the 15385 belt to stop squeaking , because its the wrong belt. I finally figured this out and bought the Special Townace Belts known only in Japan as Toyota 90916-02398 from Part Souq. I was like the child that had been taught to put ketchup on vanilla ice cream , not knowing it was a crappy combination ...
In the meantime I had had the injectors rebuilt by Dean's Auto in Portland and after this work ( NO FAULT OF DEAN'S--they did a great job --highly recommended ! ) the motor seemed to be ticking a lot at idle --I have heard people refer to a sound in diesels called a "typewriter tick." I was afraid something was amiss with the new injectors. But I wanted to replace the belts before trying to sort the tick, because the belts were squeaking at idle and so was the most audible aspect of the tick. The tick disappeared as soon as you raised the RPM's.
Well having received the new BANDO made in Japan belts, (which make the Mexico-made GATES product look like trash...) I have slain the proverbial two birds with one stone. No more belt squeak and no more tick. The funny thing is just how sharp and metallic the tick was , but it turned out to be a very short duration chirp , like a vampire bat looking for fresh blood .
In any case, I think the last of the unaccounted-for noises in the Townace is under control !:dance2:
Cheers,
Kara
