Hi all, I have an 1987 LE 4x4, thank you for reading.
I have 2 questions, one to identify some connectors and one to see if a cable going to the alternator is correct. First pic is of the 3 connectors under the drivers seat. Anyone know what they are supposed to connect to?

The next pics show a wire, maybe 2 gauge, going from the top of the alternator to a bolt on top of the motor under the drivers seat. There's a square plastic cap with a plus/positive symbol on it very close to the bolt connecting the wire. It seems out of place, don't know if its related. It's a bit broken underneath the cap but I have no idea what's going on here.. It seems weird..

Thank you very much for any help!

I don't know about most of them off the top of my head, but the one in the second picture bolted together is the positive lead from the battery. It's supposed to go in that plastic box to protect it from touching anything. If it accidentally touches any part of the frame or engine, there will be a bunch of sparks, so very bad.

As Mark said, the second set of pics is your main charge wire from the alternator to the battery and should be enclosed in the "+" box(This is discussed in several threads regarding alternators and fusible links). This is connected directly to the battery via an 80a fusible link(provided it hasn't been modified or removed)and should be repaired immediately. Disconnect the battery before messing with it.The blue connector is for the coolant level sensor. If you look at the bottom of the coolant reservoir I'm willing to bet the hole for the sensor has been plugged in some fashion due to a leaking grommet. Search the forum for a threads regarding this. The white connector looks to be for the oil level sensor on the side of the oil pan. There should be a pigtail incorporated into the alternator harness to connect between the white plug and the sensor but the alternator harnesses are frequently damaged and/or modified on these. Given that your alt to battery cable has been modified(It should be a 10 and 12 gauge white wire with blue stripe connected to single ring terminals)this is highly likely. Also, the oil level sensors frequently don't function properly. Again, several threads regarding oil level sensors. The third connector is loose on both of my vans and likely for some non-existant option. Most of the Japanese manufacturers of that era preferred to make one harness for all options on a car model and then just leave loose connectors for options that weren't on a particular vehicle.

Hello and thank you for the excellent reply's.
The plus box, as I think it's called, is broken and no longer covers or holds in place, the bolt that the alternator wire connects to. That damn thing has been floating around!! :pissed: And the coolant tank is exactly as you described, just a bunch of sealant in it, no sensor. I'll get in to the oil level sensor next. I don't think a single gauge on the dash works so my expectations are tempered.. Do you know if there are any external ports available so I can add separate oil pressure and coolant temp sensors? I'd like to do that for safety until I get the dash gauges worked out.
Thank you again!

Oil sender is down under the filter and the temp sender for the gauge is in the head between the distributor and engine. There are also some extra ports in that area. Search the sight, there's a couple good threads specific to adding a temp gauge with good pics as well as some with pics of the oil sender location. The built in search function is a bit lacking so you can try your search phrase with Google and include "toyota van tech".
