hatch latching issue

Trying to cover all the bases to figure out my exhaust smell issue. My rear hatch has always been more difficult to fully close than other Previas I've had, although they usually have needed a little help. If I don't give it a good hard push with my hand on the license plate area above the latch, it will latch, but not fully, and the door ajar light will be on. At that point, pushing on it does no good. To get it to fully latch I have to reopen it, and get it moving with some speed and force to get it fully closed. Of course I always make sure it is fully closed before driving, but I can't help wondering if imperfect closure is contributing to the occasional whiffs I get. Kinda doubt it, but need to rule it out. The door itself seems correctly aligned left to right, so I guess will fiddle with the latch mechanism and the bar it latches onto to see if either of those can be adjusted slightly. Just curious if anyone has had and solved this issue. Its not something I would even waste my time on if not for the whiffs I get now and then.

There's always aftermarket weather seal too, but I'm wary of that route.
