My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Hey everyone, this is my first post after lurking around for a couple weeks.
So me and my lady got an 86 2wd and I've come to find out that it suffers from about every common ailment that these vans can offer. First major thing I had to do was get a new differential which I was in no way about to attempt myself (I can suggest a great place in LA if anyone is curious) and now I'm on to all the other stuff which I'd like to take a whack at with my own hands. I've ordered all the bushings for the front end, shocks too. I found a couple of vans in a local pick n' pull from which I've gathered a heap of cosmetic parts from (no sliding door handle, tho.. I've told myself I can live without it). Annnnd I also have something draining my battery which brings me to the point of this post.
The van has died three times. Never when driving, every time when the doors have been open with the engine off for not even ten minutes. Would not start up. Had to get it jumped every time. After the second time I got a new battery. Put it in and the van started up great. For about a week. Then two days ago the same thing, unloading crap for ten minutes with engine off, doors open and dome lights on... and dead battery. After reading threads on this site I feel like it's the fusible link that connects to the battery. It looks like it's in bad shape so now I'm going to try replacing that. One thing I noticed is that the classic 80's toyota buzzing noise that comes on when you start the car worked the first couple of times with the new battery but then stopped. The van starts up fine but without that noise. But the noise will happen when the door is open with the car on. Is that a sign of some other electrical issue?
I am fairly ignorant about car mechanics so any advice on steps to take would be very welcome, and WOW is this site cool!
Thanks for reading!
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Hi & welcome to TVT! I would suggest using a voltmeter to check battery voltage with the engine running (should be around 14 volts). If you have anything less than 13.5 v, then you likely have an open diode or a bad regulator in your alternator. Check that and report back. Tim
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Ditto.
If the battery is new then the most likely culprit is the alternator. BTW, the engine WILL die even when it is running if the alternator is indeed not supplying current. It's a matter of when, not if.
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Thank you for the responses!
I did not realize how long my post was...
I did the voltmeter test and everything checked out fine.:dance2:
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
That sounds good! What happened then? Did you just fix/replace the alternator?
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
I'm gonna take the alternator to a place near me and get it tested, then I guess I'll go from there. May be a bit before I can get a new one...
Thanks, guys!
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Well, I talked to my buddy about this and he says it's probably not the alternator if the voltmeter tests came out good. He suggests that it may be a parasitic drain somewhere in the depths. Does that sound right? Is there any reason for me to pull the alt to get it tested?
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Things are not really clear to me based on your post/replies so far.
Have you actually checked the battery voltage when the engine is running? What is the voltage?
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Sorry to sound so confusing...
I checked with engine running and the voltage was right at 14. Revved it and turned lights and blowers on and it still read 14. Going by the instructions that came with the voltmeter (I decided to buy one) all the tests I did with it all indicated good readings
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
OK, that's good.
What is the battery voltage 10 minutes (or more) after the engine is shut off.
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Just checked it. Vans been sitting for 5 hours now, it's around 11 volts. It drops a bit lower than 11 with the load button pressed on the meter.
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
OK. First thing you need to do is to FULLY charge your battery. If you use the van to charge it, you'll need to run the van for many hours. Best to use a GOOD WORKING battery charger overnight.
Make sure the battery voltage is 12.7V after the charger is removed/disconnected for at least 10 minutes.

Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
All right I will do this. I'll have to try to borrow a charger so it may be a few days before I can reply with some updates...
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me, Sam! I really appreciate it
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
No problem. Be sure to read Tim's posts (and only Tim's posts) in the thread he suggested. You will need to understand the concept of phantom draws and how to locate them.
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Ah yes, Tim. I have been reading that... If it comes to that I am willing to do it!
Thanks, guys!
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Well, I wish I had some positive updates but unfortunately my van got stolen over this last weekend. Club and all...
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, maybe I can get another one and pick up where I left off!
Re: My new van that I love... and all the problems that came with it
Bastards! Hopefully it will show up undamaged in a parking lot somewhere. Perhaps the battery going dead will aid in your getting it back? Please keep us posted. Tim

What!?? Someone actually stole a 29 years old van? Unbelievable!

Happens all the time. For reasons I will not state here, these vans are easy to steal. They are also a popular choice for teenage stoners and rebel rousers.
