Probably. I bypassed it on my 89 4wd and drove for years without incident. Never had a problem. I left the dead unit bolted on (it cracked) and just did the double flair and union thing.
I doubt the trailer failure that dragged me backwards over a cliff was related to the mod. But maybe I did do a bad thing?
