Oh no Mr. Bill! No, noooo!
Sorry, Old SNL reference. (I Couldn't resist).
I'm an old, mostly inactive member here. I bought an '87 van which had the same problem.
After spending way too...
Use the search function for "steering bevel gear".
This is a Toyota recall issue. I had mine replaced by a Toyota dealership for free back in 2010 (IIRC).
Hope this helps. Good luck!
MonTex has not responded to my P.M.
Has he responded to anyone else yet?
Sorry, also forgot to mention: Back in the day when I was having a terrible time trying to figure out where my coolant
was going (similar problem to yours) my mechanic was doing the "hose of death"...
Check the hose that runs from your radiator to your overflow tank, it could be clogged with gunk preventing flow.
Also check the metal tube that comes off the radiator coolant filler assembly. The...

Use the search function and enter: "transmission kick-down cable".

I remember about 5 years ago when I bought my van I was looking at ...
Yes to both questions. When I decided to address all the mechanical issues my van had, I also decided that I wasn't going to
half-ass anything.
These vans seem to have a very sensitive cooling...
You should also have the radiator flushed and flow tested. If it's bad get the 3 row high efficiency re-core job.
Back when I bought my my van in 2009ish, I had a bad radiator, leaking hose of...
Way back when I bought my van, the radiator was in bad shape. I had it "re-cored" which turned out to be either a scam job or an extremely poorly done job. My van ultimately required a HG job, new...
Have you perused this thread?

JDM VANMAN,
I'm interested in the Black/white lettering sticker.
Is it the 4”x4” —$25 shipped?
Also I want to know if it's a "reverse sticker"... Meaning, is it designed to be stuck on the...
An idea I had a while back was to run a duct up the passenger side of the inner pillar next to/behind the passenger seat.
Have a small fan inside the snorkel duct, add your timer with relay. The big...
Nice van Austin!
I really like the Rhino-Liner bottom coverage. Nice contrast with the silver paint job.
I just realized the Rhino-Liner conveniently takes care of the pesky (missing?) LE...
You should only use the OEM Toyota thermostat.
Here is an article on how to replace your thermostat. In addition to the library article
you should read all 4 pages of the thread in order to...
I do the same as you with the Battery Tender.
I haven't had any issues. My radio is fairly new though.
Did you say your radio is the stock toy van radio?
If so, maybe there is an internal...
PrecisionDriven, congrats on your victory!
Also, I didn't know that Rock Auto is a parts source for ECU's.
Good to know!
While checking your fuel injectors, also check the fuel injector connectors.
I was having intermittent hesitation, then only running on 3 cylinders. Turns out my injector connectors
were all heat...
Check this thread, post #13. It has a link to a nice digital temp gauge.
This mod is on my wish list.

If your van has the original radiator, it might be time to do the high efficiency re-core or get a new one.
After I bought my van, I found that the radiator was is really bad shape. Had a shop...
One thing to consider is that Toyota engineered the van's engine to run optimally/efficiently at a predetermined temp range.
I did the electric cooling fan mod back in 2013? and during that process...
Several years ago my '87 Toy pickup had this problem.
A thread on one of the Toy Truck websites had a quick fix: Use a used .22 caliber shell.
Just place it over the top of the horn contact...
That leak looks like it's directly below your rear heater.
You probably have a leaky coolant hose going to/from the rear heater assembly.
When your van died and all the dash lights came on......
Did you mean "White Lithium grease"?
Because that's what I use. Comes in a spray can from any automotive supply store.
Use the search function for "Steering Bevel Gear Recall".
You can go to any Toyota dealership and they can run your VIN# and tell you if your van
needs the new bevel gear.
If the van still has the steering bevel gear you should call the Stealership, give them the vin#
and have them lookup whether or not the steering bevel gear was replaced by the recall.
If so,...
What's left?
You might try being like The Fonze and "Sit on it"... at the same time you're trying to click the latch.
(Your weight on the seat might take some pressure off of the latch assembly.)
Just an...
Thanks JDM!
I'm gonna have to measure my battery. I think I have one of those big group 24 jobs.
Hmmm, I'm thinking dipping it a few times in that "Flex Seal" liquid rubber stuff might be the ticket.
JDM VANMAN,
Can you post a pic of the new hold-down doing it's thing on a battery?
Thanks!

Definitely hit that rusty door lock assembly with white lithium grease.

I was having a similar issue when my auto trans was being rebuilt.
Turned out that the idle was set too high. Lowered idle to factory spec and it smoothed it out
right away.
Sigh...:dizzy:

Are those new screws stainless steel?
As per others above I have had good luck using the small "needle nose" vicegrips
in conjunction with PB Blaster. This method of course also works well on...
Ok, thanks for the replies and info there Tim and JDM.:)
Question about the ECU part #: For my 1987 4wd Automatic I have read that for California Vans the specific part# is 89661 - 28090.

Thanks for the apology/taking the high road.
I apologize for my knee-jerk reaction. Maybe a symptom of my love/hate relationship with my van.
So I guess my van is an altered cargo panel van with...
Yes. And that fact/comment might lead me to be indifferent when the next request for donations comes along.
Very cool, thanks!
BTW, my vin code is 4YR34 and is not on the list...:cnfsd:
Post a parts request in the wanted section.
JDM VANMAN has been on a parts crusade lately and might be able to help you.
And... He's in Seattle!:dance2:
Good luck!
