Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

ok, update from this morning's test: basically no smoke/steam. after a few minutes there was a slight bit of visible something, but really nothing to speak of. pretty sure the issue on startup...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

well, a quick update on the smoke. i checked all the fluids, and levels are all good without any sign of discoloration or sludge. i suspect that it's simply accumulated moisture from sitting...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

hi folks,

well, it's starting again! and the voltage while running is 14.5 V, so looks like the alternator is good as well. great news.

i got laid out with the flu for two weeks, so it took...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

thanks for the helpful info! well, a couple days ago i went ahead and attached the new alt. and checked all the cables, and tried to start. *click* i thought it might be the battery had drained, and...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

thanks, foreverly! appreciate the feedback, and i've been checking actual amp draw based on your and tim's suggestion. more on that in a sec.

first, a bit of clarification. this is *not* the...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

ok, one more check before i put in the new alt. i turned on the key and tested resistance (with battery and alternator disconnected) and there's a 40 ohm resistance. turns out removing the "IGN"...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

that's just it -- last time i tried it didn't even run long enough to check. ie. i put in a new battery, fully charged, and started the van. within about five minutes the van cut out, and wouldn't...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

thanks for the clarification, tim. so i went ahead and did this test, and i read only a very small draw in both the old and new alternators! :cnfsd: old alt: 0.41 milliamps; new alt: 1.10...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

all right, i'm perplexed.

short version: i got a new alternator, but it ALSO has a "short" between the positive terminal and the ground. what's up?

longer update: i finally removed the old...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

ok, some progress! i removed the positive wire from the alt. (10mm nut) and now the short goes up to ~500 kiloohm (very variable), which order of magnitude difference leads me to think something's...

Re: slight (but constant) electrical short

hi folks,

well, i'm kind of perplexed about this short. i've removed all the fuses, and all of the breakers and relays near th fuse box i could reach. still get around 55 kiloohm short between...

slight (but constant) electrical short

hi folks,

well, it's been a saga, as previous posts will attest. now this. short version: i go to get the van warmed up after maybe 2 months sitting; previously started fine and no issues with...
14. Re: serious shaking at speed: front end? transmission?

thanks, skibum. i would indeed be interested in what tim has to say. tim? i have a feeling he may not be around at the moment, but sure might be wrong. anyway, i'm headed out of town for the...
15. Re: serious shaking at speed: front end? transmission?

so here's a bit of an update. i spoke to the mechanic at oregon drive axle in tigard, who have a pretty good reputation and have done a bunch of older toyotas. he said that if he could do the...
16. Re: serious shaking at speed: front end? transmission?

thanks so much for the reply! yes, the movement in the tail shaft is too much. the movement is not in the u-joints themselves, but between the output from the transmission and the rest of the...
17. serious shaking at speed: front end? transmission?

hi folks,

well, i've been away for a bit (from town, and from these forums), but i'm back with more symptoms from my poor beat-up old 84 automatic (that got in a crash six months ago).

one day,...

Re: loud exhaust rattle around 700-800 rpm

ok, here's the much-delayed update. the beer can-stuffing worked, but only temporarily -- the shaking at idle seems to rattle the cut up cans loose after a few weeks. for now, i can just keep...

Re: loud exhaust rattle around 700-800 rpm

hi folks,

well, there are rattles (just at that resonance) throughout the van, not sure if it's new or not. but the (a?) main issue with the exhaust is that the place where the pipe enters the...

loud exhaust rattle around 700-800 rpm

ok, working through issues here. my van had a collision recently, and since has had a pretty major rattle in the exhaust between 700-800 rpm. actually, everything in the whole van rattles -- it's...
21. Re: automatic transmission: delayed, jerky shifts. throttle cable adjustment?

ok, here's the update.

good news: adjusted kickdown means the shifts are at lower RPM, which is good for various reasons.

bad news: had little to no effect on the "bang and shudder" problem...
22. Re: radiator leaks - confirmation, replacement, etc.

ok, great thoughts on the draincock. will grab one next time i'm at the yard.

i've been running the engine hot to test the cooling system, and under pressure the inlet and outlet hoses leak a bit...
23. Re: automatic transmission: delayed, jerky shifts. throttle cable adjustment?

ok, here's an update. after pulling off the outer rubber covering, i realized that the cable covering had come out of the metal seat that it's supposed to fit into. after filing it down a bit to...
24. Re: automatic transmission: delayed, jerky shifts. throttle cable adjustment?

wow, awesome late night responses!

ok, that makes sense: it's the kickdown cable, as i thought. but i can't figure out how to adjust it per the image i attached above. i finally found the "cable...
25. Re: radiator leaks - confirmation, replacement, etc.

ok, so here's the report: there was indeed a major leak in the radiator, near both the inlet and outlet ports.

i went ahead and replaced it with one from a salvage yard that i'd done a DIY...
26. automatic transmission: delayed, jerky shifts. throttle (kick-down) cable adjustment?

hi folks,

well, having finally dealt with the "emergency" issues on the van, i'm now trying to address an ongoing problem with the automatic transmission. in essence, it seems to have a delayed...
27. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

thanks again, tim. yes, those suggestions make tons of sense, would make it all a lot easier! i was on my way by trial and error. :wnk:

often in other technical contexts i have a hard time...
28. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

geez, that was annoying! must have pulled and redone 6 times or more. but finally got it, and the advance works fine too.

for anyone else wondering: one of my issues is telling when i'm at TDC...
29. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

well, i pulled the distributor again, and redid the whole seating of it, twice, using the timing notch for TDC and testing for compression with my finger, as per instructions below. then set the...
30. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

hi tim and others,

geez, it's a challenge to see that pulley! the belts and radiator hoses etc. block things pretty comprehensively. but i finally found the machined notch, and painted it as you...
31. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

well, i got the ecu water temp sensor at the u-pick, and it makes a world of difference indeed. thanks tons for that insight -- now i can actually keep the engine turning over below 1k rpm! ...
32. radiator leaks - confirmation, replacement, etc.

hi folks,

well, i'm moving forward on getting the rough running problem worked out, and now want to address an ongoing issue: coolant loss. since i got the vehicle it's been intermittently losing...
33. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

thanks, tim. i'll probably just circumvent it for now, see about a new part when i get things running better.

i've got a couple other questions: once i've got the engine able to idle at 750 rpm...
34. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

thanks, tim! i'll go check the salvage yard pronto. hope that might be it.

just to be sure: is the (broken) device in the red circle in the picture below the one that is the pointless temp...
35. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

you're right, it was very basic, and that is admittedly the level i'm working at here. :wnk: so, doing this basic task took quite a long while -- a significant part of which was first finding and...
36. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

i understand the firing order is 1-3-4-2, but i'm talking about which numbered wires go to which plugs. i looked it up (and it's what i remember was there before), and it says the wire numbered 1...
37. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

thanks, tim. i've been delayed, obviously: other urgent tasks came up. finally got feeler gauge, and confirmed that the "play" in the distributor shaft is just about 0.50 mm, the max allowed. ...
38. Re: very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

thanks so much, tim! really appreciate the response.

ok, here's the report. i pulled the distributor completely out and broke it down. (i'm using the 1986 manual available online, and it...
39. very rough idle, cutting out immediately: distributor? vacuum?

hi folks,

well, i have some questions. thanks for offering your experience on working on these vehicles.

(this is an 84 automatic.)

short version: i had a broken (shattered) distributor...
