For those of you who have finished the list … you know… all the things that need to be done like…..
Rebuild the head gasket, rebuild the engine, repair the leaking power steering pump, change out...
Congratulations on both the acquisition of the Hi/Lo and getting your van back on the road Trestlehead!!!!
Yeah, in the end I could not part with the van.....
It would be great to see your van....
Thanks for the quick reply Tim, well when I get some $'s scraped together I may give this a shot. I might just change the tranny at the same time too. They carry the manual tranny too, $740. Maybe I...
Hi Tim and anybody else that would know,
Is this the the transfer case that us Auto 4x4's would need to switch over to Hi/Lo? They are rebuilt and come with a warranty. ...
Thanks for the reply Tim, I put up a WTB post for one.
I have been poking around through old posts trying to figure out all the options there are to add a high/lo transfer case to my automatic van. I saw that someone added a high/lo to their auto (didn't...
Ok Tim, I will take them apart first and do an inspection.
Anybody have a good online shop for ordering a front wheel bearing kit? My mechanic said mine were shot but he wants 375+ to change them out. I was going to do it myself but my local parts shop wants...
Went ahead and replaced mine, now that I have a working one I don't think the old one ever turned on since I've owned (3 months) it until the few days before I replaced it when it was stuck on. The...
Thanks Tim..... I will check it out.
John
Hello All, a few days ago my cooling fan started staying on all the time. As in, when I start the engine its engaged and it never disengages. Fan clutch issue I imagine, but I am not sure how to...
As usual TVT comes to the rescue again! I will pick up some cable lube and do the kick down cable and the climate control cables at the same time.
thanks guys,
John
Hey Guys,
Today my van decided to stop shifting out of 1st until 4500+ rpms. I have done a search but can't find any posts talking about shifting issues but I was thinking it may have to do with the...
Right again Tim, no power coming from the alternator. I have a rebuilt on the way and a power steering pump too. Gonna change them both on Thursday. Thanks again.
Thanks Tim, I will test it in the morning.
I had a family emergency today and had to drive the van hard. Starting out from a light when switching from 2 to 3rd the tranny oil temp light, battery charge, and radiator lights went on (but not...
Thanks for the reply. It rubs in right hand corners right on the fender edge where it's closest. I have not been off road yet but I'm heading out Saturday afternoon to Anza Borrego so I will get to...
Bb, I have 205 70 r 15 on right now.
you can see from the pic how close it is in the front.
otherside is not quite as bad.
udate: I just checked, I have 8 inches at the front crossmember
BB, thanks for the reply. Would you mind talking a little about your rims/setup? What they are, how you found them. Also, is it a waste that these sammy rims are on my rig given that I am only...
Update:
had my van in for an oil change at a reputable shop. Owner told me I needed the wheel bearings redone. I asked if the larger rims and tweaked torsion bar would cause extra stress on those...
I just want to say thanks again to Tim..... I would not have tried this if he had not linked his post with detailed instructions for me. This site is better than taking it to a mechanic!

Opened up for bypass.

Hose starts to crumble as I try to remove it (sorry they are sideways... sometimes this site does that to my pics)
...
Ok I did it! Let say first that I am a mediocre wrencher so if I can do it, anybody can.
Things I learned while doing this is to really pay attention to the left side cut. That brake line is close...
Ok Tim, thanks, I will call the shop this morning and have then check it.
Cirrus
getting ready to do it myself. More pics to follow.

Hi Tim, first, thanks for all you do in answering questions, running the site, etc! It's actually the hose just below the hod, the small one, its leaking at the rubber bushing that it runs through....
Ok I think I have it located..... Small pipe (1/4- 3/8) coming from above left side and crossing the back. Where it goes through a bushing looks like its worn through and leaking. Hard to see in the...
I have another update...... I think it's coolant. Because it was golden in color I automatically thought it was oil. Radiator light came on so I smelled the drip and it smells like coolant. I thought...
Thanks for the reply Tim. Spent some time looking when I got to work. It's engine oil, coming from up high, runs down the left side of the bell housing where the tranny meets the back of the engine....
I got a big surprise yesterday when I pulled away from my house and noticed a big oil stain on the ground (bigger than usual I guess). So I parked in the garage this morning so I could see if it was...
I have had my van for about a month and I am wondering if the 15 inch rims (Samurai) really make much of a difference. They rub and that bugs me. I also dont like the thought of the torsion bar being...
Thanks for tip guys.... I will have that done when I replace the cat.
Thanks to everyone who has replied on this thread......... ARP, thats sounds like a winner. I have an Oreillys right near work so I will pop in there tomorrow. I have AC so that may hamper things a...
Thanks Foreverly,
previous owner said cooling was not and issue and that seems to be the case so far, but my hot soak issue is bad. So far Ive settled on pumping the gas paddle 3 to 5 times and then...
Thanks Tim,
found his thread and have all the part numbers etc.

Hi Tim,
I am really interested in your awsome repair for the heat soak problem. After a hilarious scene at the local country club where I picked up my son, trying to restart on a hill with a car...
Thanks Tim
Thanks Tim..... Hope its not unobtainium! previous owner said it burped 4 oz a month of tranny fluid... I am hoping this is all that is wrong.
Hi All, This one might help others so I'm posting before I do an all out internet 1 hour data mining operation. See attached photo, I think this line is from the Tranny reservoir and I think its...
Hey thanks for all the replies guys..... I think it may be "back flow" but I am not sure. I paid a lot of attention today to how I had my windows positioned.... no side middle windows open today...
Hello, I just picked up a 1987 4wd Auto LE Saturday. I posted a little about it in the Van blog last night. I have a lot to go through on the van but my first and most important is stopping exhaust...
