There's an earlier thread about replacing a bearing and seal in the distributor housing.
I found a similar but more detailed thread on a different forum for a different model of Toyota.

My answer to your question is: I doubt it.
But there's no harm in trying, i guess. Just make sure you mark all the parts so that you can assemble them again in the same position. Worst case,...
samstrader:
"I think people are saying you just need to replace the distributor when this happens. Is this correct?"
Yes. The "distributor housing assembly" with the rotating parts and the...
The distributor O-ring is part number 90099-14091
I've edited my message, and hope the pics show up now. It's been a while since I posted here and had to figure it out all over again!
I don't believe there are two O-rings. Here's the diagram from my '97 FSM:

12307

Hmmm.... I can't think of another source of oil, but with some careful snooping you will probably find it. Good luck!

Did you also replace the valve cover gasket? Both are prone to leaking with age. I've had more trouble with the gaskets, myself. The O-ring under the distributor is a much easier job.
I had a Previa that had a lot of corrosion in the coil - in the socket that the fat high voltage wire from the distributor plus into. That would at least be a relatively easy thing to check. It's...
I renewed a pair of badly yellowed '91 headlights using a 3M kit (described better in the "a few questions" thread.)
Here's a before/after shot.
Congrats on your purchase! While Previas are becoming increasingly rare, they are still amazing, unique, and worth maintaining, IMHO.
Transmission - I suppose the best thing would be some kind...
Thanks for the excellent write-up! And I appreciate how much more time it took to create it than it did to do the job. I dream of doing many more write-ups than I actually wind up doing.
And it's...
Wow, I've thought of doing something like this, but never got around to it. Since you've gone to the trouble and still couldn't find the source of the whistle, I'm glad I never tried. Thanks for...
I've no experience with outright "failure" of the SADS. I expect it would be ugly. What fails first are the rubber bits that surround the small steel tubes bolted to drive flanges of the shaft...
This is a very common issue with the Previa. The leak could be from either the valve cover gasket or the distributor O-ring. Both are made of rubber, and rubber becomes old and brittle with time. ...
I've seen this on many cars I've owned. Thanks for the tip!
I think that the entire rear axle would need to be part of the swap.
Here's that thread with the "twist"
The JDM engine I bought had to be stripped to a long block, pretty much. Intake and exhaust manifolds, oil filler, sump pan and even the oil pickup were...
Nope. Different ratio. I think you'd have to swap both front and rear to avoid roasting the transfer case.
There might be fitment issues as well but I'm not sure about that. And you'd have to...
The JDM engine I bought definitely had different intake and exhaust manifolds. And it was a N/A version (no crank position sensor). It also has a shallower sump and a different oil pickup. But had...
Nice! Lucky you!
Yep, good idea to replace the PCV while you've got easy access. You are likely to find that the grommet and hose are as brittle as glass, so you can replace them, too. PCV hose:...
The first couple of times I dropped the engine and transmission together using the same rationale you have. But I've switched to pulling the transmission first now.
The reason has to do with the...
You'll need to remove the pistons and rods to remove the crank if you replace the bearings.
You'll also need a ring compressor to get the nice clean re-ringed pistons back into the block. But both...
It happens.
You're on the right track to remove the passenger seat. Then remove the plastic door sills on that side of the car, and the seat belt where it attaches to the floor. Peel up the carpet...
No I haven't had any issue with the JDM engine I've installed, but that's a sample of ONE! Can't draw sweeping conclusions from my one experience! Maybe we can take a poll here - Any other JDM...
I bought and installed one JDM engine and it ran just fine. I sold the car to a friend who gave it to his son and so I'm still sort of connected to the van - it's still running fine some three...
If you have the wherewithal to remove the engine and put it back in, and the tools and courage to take off the head, I'd say the rest of the way down to the crank is easy. Then you can clean the...
Agreed. Isolate the source of the leak before you dive in. The main crank seal is conventional, but the cover is a pain to remove, especially if the engine is still in the van.
If you have to take...
agreed. They look fine to me. A little rust staining like what I see in the pictures will not be an issue for you. I wouldn't even bother to try to remove it. Once the engine is running it will...
I've got my new struts on today, and drained the fluid out of the old ones.
Water theory is confirmed!
There was more water than oil in the left one. What oil there is is an emulsion. Here's the...
All shock absorbers contain oil. The damping action is produced as the oil is shoved through an orifice in the valve mechanism. Gas filled shocks (and struts) contain pressurized gas over the oil,...
We had a cold snap here in the northwest last week. The temperatures at dawn were in the high teens and it didn't break the freezing point all week. I drove one of my other cars the first part of...
The oil pump gasket is an odd-shaped O-ring thing, and I'm sure they are available from Toyota. Getting the cover off requires a JIS screwdriver bit and an impact hammer, though. If you try to get...
I'd start with the Idle Air Valve. It's a gizmo under the throttle body that has a twisty thing that controls that amount of air that feeds the engine while idling, bypassing the throttle butterfly....
Here are some stream-of-consciousness tips. I'm sure I'm missing something.
There's no sub-frame to remove. It is a straightforward job and a lot easier than getting the engine disconnected from...
I had a similar problem with my '93. When it shifted either in or out of overdrive, it felt like I was passing over a "rumble strip". Eventually I realized that there were no rumble strips around...
My '97 has a hitch receiver, and it looks very OEM. It isn't like the German one pictured, though. I'll try to get some reasonable pictures and post them here.

this is the newer style with the 14mm bolt sleeves
Whew! A good feeling indeed!
I guess this is a case of where "the devil's in the details".
I do not believe that it is important to mark the location of the shaft with respect to the dampener on the front of the engine. What IS important is that you mark the relative locations of the...
Very true, Tim-
And I've been down this road before with another obscure hobby. I had more time and devised a product that no one else in the world made. I sold them all over the world - as far as...
Love the business name suggestion: "Happy SADS" !
I can't say the thought of a SADS repair cottage industry hasn't crossed my mind, but I still have a day job and tend to be a little stingy about...
I found an adjustable shell reamer on ebay for $30, so the boring process is now a one pass operation - a lot quicker and more precise.

Have you checked the U-joints in your driveshafts? I'd rule out relatively simple things before suspecting the transfer.
If you narrow things down to the transfer case, drain and inspect the oil. ...
Could it be that your supercharger belt is slipping, or that you supercharger is binding up (maybe run out of oil)?
I have puzzled over this myself but my only S/C Previa is a '97. For it, the thing you're looking for is 17403-76040 . It's available, but expensive. The parts lists I've seen list a different...
I can add a few things:
The double O-ring under the oil filter mount is p/n 15692-76010. Get a new one!
I have yet to see a Previa water pump that has failed, but I've seen the o-ring seals...
Sure enough - swapping all those rubber bits exorcised my noise! My theory is that the lower bit isolates the body of the injector from the fuel rail, and without it the action of the injector...
Other than noise, I don't know what catastrophic failure looks like. I'd guess the noise will just get worse until you can't stand it any more.
The guy that put up this video is a friend of mine,...
I've had a similar sound in my '94. I only hear it at idle, but it bugs me because the engine is freshly rebuilt.
Just the other day I pulled the injectors out and replace the rubber bits that...
