I purchased van in 2010 with 80k miles, the existing exterior paint and interior. It now shows about 86k, I exercise it regularly, and cannot verify the mileage, PO had mechanical and paint done...
Scrapping 1985 cargo van. It was on the road until 5/29/2021. I removed the tail lights, front running light and turn signal lenses and rear view mirrors. I have some 84- 85 specific parts [new];...
I believe the fuel tanks for 2wd vans are identical . My gauge has not worked for years, I assume the capacity to be under 15 gallons, and fill up at 120- 200 miles, my van gets 20 mpg consistently.
A slide hammer is useful to remove the axles. I purchased the bearings from Rock Auto and had the local machine shop install them.
1985 vans have recirculating ball steering, not the rack and pinion of 86 and later models. I don't know if rebuild kits are available, but rock auto has rebuild options.
The stock harness should fit that alternator. Did the retailer sell you the wrong one?
The alternator, carefully. Thanks to Tim's instructions , I then replaced the brushes and voltage regulator in the older unit, which was a reman that had only about 15k miles, and re installed,...
I had the same issue, and used a grinder to get the clearance needed. Hope someone else can shed light on this.
My 85 has had 2 life threatening issues at the fuse box, one at the headlight connection and one with the wiper relay, which caused the fuse panel to smoke and glow red. Creative work with wiring and...
I had a similar issue a few years ago, changed out the u joints, no joy. Eventually I figured out it was the pass side rear wheel bearing, swapped in a used axle. No issues since. Replacing the...
Metro areas will generally have a good muffler shop that does custom work. Here in Buffalo, NY , we have a ''Mufflerman'' that has a good reputation. My 86 2wd had the cat removed and parts bouncing...
Without getting into the back story, I'm wondering if anyone has tried changing the water pump pulley size to increase flow in the cooling system. I realize that this could be taken too far, causing...
After a similar headlight failure scenario, I found a burned connector with melted plastic on the back of the fuse panel. I cut off a piece of the connector, and used a new wire connector to the fuse...
How long has it been since the radiator in your van has been removed and flushed? I am always surprised by the amount of debris that builds up, and restricts coolant flow, after 3-4 years.
I would think that if the thermostat were not opening, the engine would overheat all the time, not just at idle. When it gets hot, can you hear the fan clutch engage? I would say, based on my own...
Ever shop rock auto? They have some of those #'s on closeout for less than $20 plus shipping.
I have an 85. Radiators for 84-85 are not the same as 86 and up, and I have not been able to find a new one for years.
My headlights failed on my 85 a few years ago, they got dim first. I found the connector at fuse box burned. repaired it by using new female connector and cutting the corner off of the fusebox...
Removing the plastic trim will give you better access to the headlamp. The chrome trim needs to be removed next. The tiny screw were rusted in on mine, I removed the bucket, or nacelle, by removing...
I had the radiator re-cored by the best local shop in my area. I could not find a new one for the 85. $400.
I knew of the possible negative effects of the lower coolant temp when I decided to try the lower temp thermostat. I closely monitor the operation of the engine, check the plugs, etc., monitor fuel...
I have 170 degree thermostats in both of my vans, and have not noticed any ill effects, one has 225k miles and has had the 170 in it for 10 years or more. Doesn't use any oil. I also installed a...
The auto trans used in the vans is manufactured by Aisin Warner, and similar units were used in Volvos, and other make automobiles. The lock up converter functions on the 4th [overdrive] gear.
I can tell you that #1 is indeed the idle adjustment screw.I would be very interested in the results of your tranny shifting issue, as my 86 2wd has a similar problem. There are 2 procedures I have...
I have not tried posting pics here. I believe Tim has a posting with pics using the previa heater core. Not my original idea. I used 5\8 heater hose, pex tees and a ball valve, cut the hoses to the...
Happy to hear you found that without too much drama. I had a similar problem many years ago on a 71 econoline. The cable was not secured and was worn thru by the rotating fan over a period of...
Re check the fusible links under passenger seat, I had a very similar issue after shorting the battery.
I purchased previa heater core from rock auto, installed it behind bumper in airflow using heater hose, pex fittings and a manual ball valve. It drops the temp about 10 on a 90 degree day. I feel...
It has been my experience with radiators and heater cores to find a surprising amount of sediment and general debris internally. This after flushing water comes clear, and the offending rad is...
You can remove the glove box with 2 small screws on the hinges, then unbolt the support bar for it, to gain better access to the fuse panel. The panel is held in by one screw, and 2 tabs at the top,...
I had the same experience with headlights, the wire connector on the back of the panel was burned. I cut off the corner of the connector, and used a female spade connector to the panel, has been...
In a previous post, I related my problem with wiper fuse blowing. Finally had time today to really investigate, and found the trouble in the fuse panel. With a circuit breaker installed in place of...
My 85 van started blowing the fuse for the front wipers a few days ago. I drove the van from NY to NC, ordered a replacement motor. It seems that the fuse blows at random, not when the wipers are in...
the seat belt 'buckle' for the front passenger seat bolts to the engine cowling . you would remove the front seat, and one bolt secures it. I'm not referring to the rear seats[ i don't have any!]
I need a radio antenna and seat belt buckle for front passenger seat, the' female' part.
I had the radiator out at the time, this gave me room to use an impact wrench [air] and zinged the nut off.
Automatic transmissions in vans have fluid coolers in the radiator.
My 85 van just keeps rolling along. I bought it in 2000, intending to drive it to death in a couple of years, subjecting it to western New York winters. Instead, I use it to transport my windsurfing...
The repair manual is the toyota publication? if so, I will purchase it.
I would like to install a trans cooler on my 86. Other than trying to determine by feeling the existing trans fluid lines for a temp difference, does anyone know which line to the radiator trans...
I had the same problem in my 85. Eventually I found a burned connector where one of the large connectors enters the back of the fuse box, under the dash. I was able to cut off a portion of the...
ok, I just noticed the pic you posted, you had a spare connector to plug into it, I assume.
Not at all!! Both of my vans have the modification. That connection for the tach at the distributor, is it the plug that is clipped to the distributor housing??
Installed a mechanical temp gauge the other day, shows 170-180 deg in 82deg ambient temp. I'm happy. higher temps or stressful operation and I could open the valve to the previa heater core I...
Thanks, Tim, that helps, the picture was perfect!! I noticed today that the temp gauge is starting out at what I estimate is 150-160 on a cold start. I will go shopping. mike.
Thanks, Tim, I have not installed a temp gauge in my life!! What is the thread size for the sensor?
Thanks, what size is the coolant sensor fitting?
After much thought, I changed out all four fuel injectors and connectors, and the connector for the TPS. Reassembled and the engine runs good, I am now installing an aux radiator while the cooling...
I've been pre occupied getting the radiator recored on my 85 and installing it today, it was leaking and down for almost a week. I changed it out 8 years ago, I should have had the old one recored...
