Thanks BB! I found the thread after removing "4WD" from my tag search (thanks Gwen!) I was hoping for a professionally produced video with good lighting and an inspiring soundtrack of someone...
My 87 4wd auto LE had never leaked more that a few drops of oil, but after a couple of recent trips that included long stretches on gravel, I noticed a puddle of oil underneath. On close inspection,...
Too late at night to puzzle this out, but twice in the last 12 months I have had major coolant leaks caused by corrosion in the long metal pipes carrying coolant through the engine compartment (once...
I've done this from inside my 86 and it did require a lot of "dash" disassembly and partially unbolting and pulling back the "knee bar" member to extract the old blower. Yes it is a PITA but it feels...
Is it just me? Twice in the last 6 months I have had major coolant leaks when metal tubing carrying coolant "blew out". In both cases, the tubes went from not leaking noticeably to hemorrhaging in a...
The old(?) style metal heater valve on my 87 froze up awhile back. I was lucky enough to have two vans in a local picknpull at the time and pulled the heater valves off of both of them. Turns out the...
Since these guys got the AC working last summer for what seemed like a reasonable price and the fact that they have done other work that I was happy with, I have been giving them the benefit of the...
I had a local shop resurrect the AC on my 87 4wd van last summer and it worked through the hot times. At the beginning of this summer I turned it on and got warm air, not cold. Took it back to the...
Quick update: I swapped out the heater valve myself since the shop was booked for a week. AC now blowing cold. FYI the plastic heater valve I pulled from the 89 was a direct replacement for the metal...
That's a nice stash you got going. I would grab any door/hatch latches that are in good shape. The hinges on my fuel flap broke off at one point so I like to keep a spare.
"Snorkel" hoses go bad and...
There are actually two 89 vans in a Pick n Pull north of Seattle and I pulled the heater valves (and a few other parts) off both of them today. They don't look quite the same as the one on my van (no...
A couple of years ago I got a recommendation from a friend for a good repair shop that is close to where I live. I have had them do a few repairs on my vans and they have also worked on my son's...
It's all back together and the new blower is blowing at 4 different speeds! A couple of things to mention: I had to pull really hard on the knee bar to make enough space to get the blower...
New blower motor (four seasons from rockauto, $18) and resistor module on the way. I got the old motor out, but even with the knee bar pulled back farther than what looks to be the case in bald...
Well, my van isn't quite that torn up . . . yet. Thanks for the pics. I've got to say, I'm a little nervous about figuring out what all the dangling plugs/wires connect to when it comes time for...
Yes (unfortunately, in this case), it has AC
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Tim. I didn't see the connection to the motor at first and thought I would be applying power to test through the plug to the resistor block. When I...
My blower stopped working at any speed and I have things ripped (dash panel, etc.) out to replace it, but I would like to be sure that's the problem before I actually pull the blower. I have checked...
over the years, the "runability" issues I have had that caused the type of symptoms you describe are: Bad air intake hose (sounds like you eliminated that one), bad coil (it's
inside the...
replaced the hoses, checked to be sure the piston was moving freely in the caliper (I could push it in with my fingers without much effort), tried different pads, made sure everything was sliding...
You need to replace the low beams, that's how they work (or don't)
Thanks Burntboot for the detailed reply. So, is it vacume that pulls the piston back when you release the pedal? I checked the caliper out a few days ago when I realized it was still dragging ( the...
This summer I replaced my front brake calipers. I had ingnored the signs too long and the passenger caliper was frozen, the pad down to metal and the rotor shot. I had replaced the calipers/rotors 6...
Just finished installing a rebuilt alternator and a rebuilt power steering pump (A1 Cardone from Rock Auto) last night. Noticed a small puddle of PS fluid under the car this morning and hoped it was...
It seems I never finished the story. The problem with the alternator on my 87 van was due to the cable from the output terminal "hanging loose" because the plastic insulator ferrule that is supposed...
Wish I had read this before I tried to pull mine out.
Thanks Tim. Next (virtual) stop, Rock Auto.
1st Toyota (titus will toyota) lists them on their website for $414. They charge a flat 10% of order total for shipping. Of course, I noticed that after I paid a guy $500 to recore mine. He did use...
I just checked online for alternators. Rock Auto has 5 choices: Pure Energy, ACDELCO, Beck/Arnley, Denso, Remy (premium reman). Not much difference in price. Is one of these likely to be better than...
Since a rebuilt alternator fixed (temporarily) the problem before, I suspected it might be the source this time around. A couple of things puzzle me though: Why, when the alt. is temporarily not...
Rather than start a new thread, I'll just hijack this one. My 87 developed the xmas lights and associated symptoms a few years ago which would occur intermittently. This would happen if the van had...
That's what I'm talking about! I'll give it a try. thanks
Thanks tim. From your reply I gather that you still suspect that I have a leak in the ex. system. This issue with exhaust in the cabin first appeared after I had the muffler replaced and the cat....
It's a done deal! Got my van back together and it runs GREAT. Here is what I replaced or had worked over: new-exhaust manifold, water pump, FPR, fuel filter, air filter, all belts, several hoses,...
An alternator heading south can also cause the xmas lights. Replacing mine fixed the issue.
"Shoe Goo" has worked for me on both vans. It's hard to do a clean job, but it does stick to the rubber and plastic.
Tim thanks for your input on the polarity question. As far as manifold studs go, I ordered enough to replace all of them, just in case, months ago from Rock Auto. The rear one was the only one broken...
So, a mere 6 months later and I finally got around to doing this repair. The van has been "gutted" for about two weeks. The head has been cleaned up, valves ground, new guides and seals. The...
Thanks Tim for your thorough reply and for the great pics. That oil and dirt free engine compartment is an inspiration. I guess I will see how I feel when I get into it before deciding how far to go....
Thanks for your response Tim and for this great site. The thread you linked is actually what got me thinking about some of these issues. So , if it was your van, would you use the rebuilt injectors...
After posting frequently for awhile on that other TV website as a new van owner with lots of questions, I have a spent the last few years with few repairs and the experience to handle those that...
