Don't mind me chiming in, as I'm a little late to the party. I need to check the 4WD part of the forum more often.
Something is bugging me about the fact you're still overheating even after...
2WD rads are different from 4WD ones, and are not interchangeable.
Tim is correct, it is the plug for all the powered goodies in the door.
I like to use a bit of aviation sealant in conjunction with the supplied gasket for water pumps. Just a light coating on both mating surfaces is all you need.
You can get by without it, but I...
Ahhhh, the dreaded fuel filter. When I did mine it was hot out, and exposure to the vapours ended up giving me the worst nose/throat infection ever.
I use K&N filters. I'll never go back to any other filter, even OEM.
Loose wiring harness connection would explain christmas lights on bumps/rough road. Have you confirmed all connections good other than the posts?
I've used NGK plugs for all the vehicles I've owned. Never had any issues with them. Though I've never tried the highend Iridium/Laser Platinum series, just the G/V-Power series.
Before you start worrying about your throttle cable, be sure to check your air intake hose (the black hose in between the MAF and the Throttle body) for cracks. Vacuum leaks will cause rough shifting...
Today, I thought I'd share my experience on how to clean a dirty reservoir tank. After replacing worn coolant hoses, and completing a thorough cooling system flush, it was on my list to find a way to...
I went A/M with my timing chain/sprocket set. 23,000 km on it so far.
Its so hard to diagnose noises on the internet without an isolated sample, and even then its better to be with...
I agree with Tim, the molded hose would be the way to go. Though if you're going the bulk hose route, take a look at Gates Unicoils too. Might save you a buck or two.
It should look like this:

I'm using a Beck Arnley TPS as well. All is well for my van.
I have to say Tim, if it weren't for you and the great Toyota community, I wouldn't have bought a Toyota Van.Thank you so much. Oh great edifice of knowledge. :wrthy:
I took the time last weekend to fit, and approximate where the seats will go. Toyota was nice enough to leave the space where the they attach unstamped when they assembled the vehicle in '86.
...
I found the answer to which way the seats need to be installed. Figured I'd thumb through my owners manual and found a page on captain chairs. :dance1:
"Pull the lock release lever and turn the...
Just thought I'd chime in on the topic of gasket manufacturers.
I used a Fel-Pro valve/grind kit from my local distributor and haven't had a problem (22,000km/13,670mi on it so far.) Obviously OEM...
Thanks for the tips Tim -- looking forward to getting my hands dirty on this project.
Still waiting to see if anyone who has the captain seats could help me out and post clear picture of the floor...
I've been considering the possibility of welding the flanges to the floor pan. That will depend on if I can get away with securing the them with stainless hardware, or it space will be an issue.
...
Got a few quick questions, maybe one of you guys could help me out. I have an 86' LE that came with benches, and I managed to get some mint captain chairs from a parts van.
Obviously the floor...
I looked into it and checked the owners manual. :LOL2:
1986 Toyota Van Owners Manual (I don't imagine it would be too different from an '89 manual.)

"When the "P/W LOCK" switch is...
I believe that button is to disable the passenger side lock/window controls (I could be wrong). That particular button in my van is missing as well, but the PO had soldered a bridge between that...
I too am guilty of reusing the simple copper gaskets, if I don't have any new ones on hand. I argue that for the price, its easy to justify replacing them all. However, the gasket I'm referring to...
Sorry for the late reply Skibum, glad to see you're getting elbows deep in a HG replacement! :D
Definitely looks like your HG was in the beginning stages of blowing -- good to see that its being...
Cheers guys, I'll make sure it says ToyotaVanTech.com in all future posts. :)
I'd like to add one more point to the original thread topic. Its worth noting that the Coolant Temperature Sensor...

As promised, here is the picture showing the location of the coolant temp sensor. I believe it takes...
The circuit is the electrical connection between the sensors and ECU. Anywhere along that circuit could be an electrical short (chaffed/melted wires, loose connections etc.) I'd start investigating...
Here ya go :)
Code 4 / Water temp sensor / may be the coolant temperature sensor circuit OR the sensor itself.
Code 11 / Switch / air conditioner switch, TPS circuit, TPS, or neutral start...
There are a few general symptoms of a blown head gasket, or gasket that is starting to fail. Depending where on the gasket the failure is and how severe (block/head cracked/erosion etc) usually...
Sounds like you have a tiny leak somewhere in your head gasket. I had the same problem with mine -- only after driving long distances would the combustion gases finally push out enough coolant to...
