    Re: Cooling system Mods

Checking in on this, since I shared my initial experience -

I still have my van and I still have the additional "radiator" four years later.

I take the van from L.A. up to rural Northern...

    Re: Alternator woes

Funny, I was just coming to complain about my alternator and lo and behold, the "Alternator Woes" thread is right on top!

Has anyone attempted to order this:...

    Re: Oil Light Problem

This is SO not worth starting a new thread about but I've discovered yet another bizarre oil light problem.

Now that my van is back to being a long-hauler after an overhaul, I noticed my oil...

Re: How I fixed my broken horn

I had this same issue and finally got around to fixing it, though using a slightly different approach.

The part at issue for me was the contact itself rather than the ring. So I uncreatively...

    Re: Horrible overheating issue

Sounds like a small gasket leak for sure, which is the beginning of the gasket failing. The longer you drive, the more pressure (typically from a break between the combustion chamber and the cooling...
  6. Re: Temp gauge redline... air blowing cool

First thing I'd check once everything's not hot is your coolant level, not just in the overflow tank but under the actual pressure cap. A lot of times, this symptom is indicative of air or exhaust...
  7. Re: Is my brand new fan clutch a dud?

HISTORY — Just finished fixing all culprit issues associated with overheat, fan clutch, belts, water pump, radi cap, thermostat, hoses. Runs just fine and behaves normally EXCEPT ...In traffic or...

    Re: Cooling system Mods

Whoops, I should have looked more closely at that photo! If you look at my pictures, you'll see a piece bolted to the floor of the van -- that's the heater valve. (It's not particularly well photoed,...

    Re: Cooling system Mods

Yup, that's right. Situate it before (in this case, towards the back of the van) than the valve that opens and closes the flow to the actual heater core. That way, you'll always be supplying your new...

    Re: Cooling system Mods

Hey all -- Just wanted to quickly share my experience with the 'extra radiator' mod -- I recently did a head gasket and I wanted to protect my investment/never ever try to do that job in an apartment...

    Re: Sliding door exterior mechanism

I dunno if it's ever come up in another thread, but have we discussed WHY these break?

Reason being, I just finally found one, and it's in amazing shape. I've had my van for six years and the...
  12. Re: New ignition cylinder

Ah I see, they changed the part between the 87 and 88 year van. I was looking at the 1987 rockauto parts list. I apologize!
  13. Re: New ignition cylinder

RockAuto sells them new -- that said, the quality doesn't seem near as nice as the original unit. Mine requires a key jiggle a lot of the time to get it fully engaged, and it's only about 1-2 years...

    Re: Power steering failure

When I used to work more on small moped/moto motors, my smarter-than-I friend had a trick to get bearings into the case halves when rebuilding -- we'd put the cases in a toaster oven on a low setting...

    Regular air filter maintenance

I'd recommend it! ... Sure, it's a pain to access, and sure, I waited until I was doing a big ol' TPS/vacuum hose project but I was shocked to find:

    Re: Draining radiator

    Hey there --

The radiator drain is on the bottom back of the radiator underneath the water inlet. It's not super easy to see, but you can get at it if you remove the plastic shield from the bottom...

    Re: Coolant Reservoir Leak

The reason I did it the above way was because the OD of the sliding bit is larger enough than the sensor body to make it pretty difficult to put on. In hindsight however, having the grommet steadied...

    Re: Coolant Reservoir Leak

Hey all --I managed to fix this as well using information from this thread, and I thought I'd share!

I ended up starting with the black RTV as a bandaid, and it did last for a good 6-10 months,...

Re: PARTING OUT: 1989 4x4 TV

Do you possibly still have the radiator cap housing? It's listed as the 'water outlet' in Toyota parts-ese. (The thing the cap and temp sensors attach to). Lemme know, thank you!

    Re: Steering rack options

After developing a pretty significant leak at the boot, I bought a remanufactured rack off of ebay for about the same or maybe even less money than this unit above. That was about 5 years ago, and I...
