    Disable EFI system/starting?

Will pulling either the 15 amp EFI fuse, or the 30 amp EFI fusible link (large square plastic fuse), disable starting and running? Will one alone? Both? Thanks.

    Red oil light troubleshooting

    Van: 1987 Cargo, new acquisition.

Red oil pressure light started coming on today. The cluster has no gauge, just the light.
The light was coming on at idle (either stopped or coasting). It would...
  3. Is there a way to disable the red oil light?

I followed the procedure of unplugging the sensor to test whether it's a false positive. It is.

It's been on for years now. Is these a way to just stop disconnect the light?
  4. Re: Photos gone from alternator replacement thread?

Thanks Gwen. They are helpful threads with great step-by-step instructions.
  5. Photos gone from alternator replacement thread?

Is it just my computer, or are the photos gone from these excellent/helpful threads on alternator replacement and wiring harness replacement?

Re: Temperature gauge slightly above half. Ok?

    Appreciate the thoughtful response SwampTony.

I think you're right, with vehicles of this age and gauges that might not be finely tuned, it may be difficult to decide exactly whether a particular...

Re: Temperature gauge slightly above half. Ok?

Thanks for the response. That's a really helpful list you put together in the other thread. Given that the cost of the parts is relatively inexpensive, it definitely seems prudent to simply do them...

Temperature gauge slightly above half. Ok?

Recently picked up a van and the temperature gauge will sometimes sit slightly above the midpoint. Is that still normal? Or, should there be a dead-spot to the left it doesn't go over?

    Sometimes...

Re: 20w-50 oil for these vans?

Appreciate the response. And thanks:lol:. Glad to know it's at least in the manual. Once the summer has past I'll also be doing 10w-40. That's what I would have guessed.

    20w-50 oil for these vans?

I just picked up a new van. Miles are around 150k.

There's a sticker on the windshield indicating the last oil change was with 20w-50. Is this an acceptable weight? Or, should I drain it?

  11. Re: Red oil pressure light. Is this the sensor? (Timsrv =). or anyone)

Thanks again. I'll tape it off to be sure.

LOL. I suspected that if there really were no pressure the engine would soon cease proper operation. Apparently even Toyota can't make a wonder...
  12. Re: Red oil pressure light. Is this the sensor? (Timsrv =). or anyone)

Appreciate it Tim. I like the idea of an actual oil pressure reading rather than just a red 'panic' light. I think I'll pursue installing one as it looks easy enough.

    And, ah, Photobucket. I'd...
  13. Red oil pressure light. Is this the sensor? (Timsrv =), or anyone)

My red oil pressure light has been coming on. I did a search here and found this thread, in which Tim suggests disconnecting the sensor as a means to test it. ...

Thoughts on using oil with higher zinc (ZDDP)?

This has been a bit of a hot topic on some forums. What are your thoughts on using oils with higher ZDDP in our beloved vans?

Most off-the-shelf oils are now in the 800 PPM range, down...
  15. Re: Had to use longer bolt for transmission pan drain plug, stripping? Issues?

Appreciate the responses so far. Thanks.

I will need to either repair or replace the pan eventually. My main concern now is whether I can safely drive it. Would any metal filings be trapped by the...
  16. Had to use longer bolt for transmission pan drain plug, stripping? Issues?

    Hi everyone,

I recently picked up a nice 1988 automatic with 157K. Transmission works nicely. Fluid was tan/brownish. Decided to do a few drain a fills.

When I went to remove the drain plug, it...

Which oil weight do you typically use? Good year round application?

Is a 10w-30 appropriate, or too thin for warmer weather?
  20. Re: New Owner - a thank you, and a question on fluid oil capacity.

Thanks. I'll make a note of that filter and pick a few up for future use.
  21. Re: New Owner - a thank you, and a question on fluid oil capacity.

Thanks Tim. With my wire unplugged from the sensor the red light will go off when I start the van. After a minute or so it will come on and then go on and off. Perhaps as it warms up something is...
  22. Re: New Owner - a thank you, and a question on fluid oil capacity.

Thanks Gwen. Mine is a 4Y. Being into older vehicles, I tend to check oil fairly regularly. Sadly, many fine older vehicles die because an owner simply never pulls the dipstick.

    I was reading that...
  23. Re: New Owner - a thank you, and a question on fluid oil capacity.

Here are photos of the bend at the base of the dipstick. Normal?

So, how much oil does everyone's van take? :)
  24. questions on fluid oil capacity, dipstick, oil light

    Hi everyone,

I'm a new Van owner (5 speed, 86). When I got it, the red oil pressure light would come on often. Previous owner is someone I have a friendly relationship with, and he said it was...
