Weight (GVW) and cargo weight capacity?

My van is a cargo van with the leaf springs. I am wondering how much I can carry inside it. Would it be similar to a small Toyota pick up. I carry stuff all the time in my Honda Element but that is going to be sold and the Van will be my new daily driver.

Re: Anybody now the weight capacity for the cargo vans

Gross vehicle weight rating is listed on the door tag in the drivers door jamb. It will list a vehicle rating as well as front and rear axle ratings. Load capacity is gvwr minus the scale weight of the van. Just make sure you don't exceed either of the axle ratings.

    Toyota Van weight

Does anyone know the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the 80's toyota van? Or wet/dry weight?

    Re: Toyota Van weight

The GVWR for a 1987 Toyota Van 2wd is 4850 lbs.

4wd is probably a little more. Check the tag on your driver door jamb...it should be listed above your VIN number.

Link to online scans of manufacturer specifications (from dealer literature) for US Vans (all years) can now be found HERE in the TVT Library.

Re: Weight (GVW) and cargo weight capacity?

But trestlehed, YOUR van is different from all the other vans ... you know that from looking in your wallet, right?

Seriously, I bet Darren made an error — he has YR32 as 4WD cargo, but that's the 4WD DLX. I'll shoot him an email.

Yes. And that fact/comment might lead me to be indifferent when the next request for donations comes along.

Re: Weight (GVW) and cargo weight capacity?

I'm truly sorry if my comment offended you, trestlehed. You've made similar comments so many times yourself that I wrongly assumed you would take it in the spirit in which it was intended. I apologize.

I did get an email back from Darren, and what I learned is that Toyota's chassis codes are NOT exactly the same as the VIN body type digits 5-8. For Toyota, digits 5 thru 8 of the VIN include the trim level and (in the case of cargo vans) whether or not the van is a panel van or window cargo.

So my '89DLX 4WD with VIN JT3YR32 has a chassis code of YR31, and your 4WD panel cargo with VIN JT4YR34 has a chassis code of YR32. All 4WD LEs have a VIN beginning JT3YR36 and the same chassis code as my 4WD DLX — YR31.

Thanks for the apology/taking the high road.
I apologize for my knee-jerk reaction. Maybe a symptom of my love/hate relationship with my van.

So I guess my van is an altered cargo panel van with camper side windows. (there is a badge on the right rear above my bumper):

Re: Weight (GVW) and cargo weight capacity?

I appreciate the unsolicited apology; thanks.

The 4WD Cargo Vans were only imported as panel vans. Some had unique aftermarket windows installed; others got aftermarket windows that look a lot like OEM.

What baffles me is the number of 2WD panel cargo vans that were converted to have OEM-styles windows. Why didn't the conversion companies just order window cargo vans and save themselves the trouble???

I have a conversion cargo (1986 2WD) that was built as a window van. I have to go look at the plate, but I think it was the same company that did yours.
