1984 Liteace - weak/no spark
Hi guys,
Got this sweet old 1984 liteace for a few hundred bucks, was running alright but recently had trouble starting. Roadside assist says weak/no spark, recommend new distributor :'(
Almost as much as the van cost. I like this van, it's fun to drive and it looks cool, but it kind of hurts.
In West australia... but they can't find one local, have to get one shipped from east aus. Anyone local able to hook me up or know someone who can?
Or any other ideas of a cheaper fix... :O

forgot to mention - this vehicle has a 3Y in it. does that mean i need the standard distributor or one to suit a 3Y?

Re: 1984 Liteace - weak/no spark
Here's one that looks like it'll fit and is in Australia, check it out-

double check your chassis code for proper fitment the one I listed looks like it fits for your year but not your chassis.
If you have the proper part number then you may be able to cross reference it with other vehicles listed below.
Good luck
Edit
The 2Y engine is an OHV, eight valve construction just like the 1Y. It shares that engine's 86.0 mm bore, but stroke is increased to 78.0 mm for a displacement of 1.8 litres. There are also 2Y-J and 2Y-U engines with differing emissions control equipment.
- OHV, eight valves
- Capacity: 1,812 cc
- Bore × stroke: 86.0×78.0 (mm)
- Compression ratio: 8.8
- Reference output (2Y): 79 PS (58 kW) at 5,000 rpm, 14.3 kg·m (140 N·m) at 3,200 rpm (net)
95 PS (70 kW), 15.5 kg·m (152 N·m) (gross)
Applications:
3Y-CEdit
This is the low emissions motor with catalytic converter exhaust system
- OHV 8 valve
- Displacement: 1,998 cc
- Inside Bore × Stroke: 86.0 mm ×86.0 mm
- Compression ratio: 8.8
- Reference output: 63kW at 4,600 RPM, 155 Nm at 3,400 RPM
Applications:
- LiteAce XTRA TRACK Wagon YM40(RGMDSQ),YM41(RVMDSQ)
- Toyota Townace Van 30 series YR39

Re: 1984 Liteace - weak/no spark
thanks for the help i will look into this.
it's a 1984 liteace which had a 2Y previously but now has a 3Y, sorry if i wasn't clear about that.
would a distributor be something an amateur could replace? or is it complicated and going to give headaches if not done correctly?
cheers
edit:
also found this distributor for a 3Y-C, is this the right one? or the one you linked, which is for a 2Y?

extra edit:
Just noticed there's electronic vs. points distributors. Like the one listed below. Is there a noticable difference? I'm reading that electronic don't need to be tuned like points. Would you recommend electronic for this vehicle?

(thanks for the help, im new)

Re: 1984 Liteace - weak/no spark
liteacelad,
lets back up for a second before you start purchasing parts,
1) have you had the Van properly diagnosed to know it really is the distributor?
2) find out which series 3Y motor you have, I'm not 100% sure if that will matter but it's a good idea to know for future repairs.
I don't do any of the work on my vans so as far as diagnosing and giving tips on repairs is something that I'm not a professional on doing. You'll need to do a lot of reading and research using the "search" feature to find similar issues to yours and go from there.
