    4Y head on 3Y block?

When I purchased my 87 2wd , it came with a pile of receipts for most of repairs and maintenance from the three previous owners. While organizing all these I found one invoice for an 1997 engine replacement. It clearly stated the use of a 3Y'engine. The sticker on my engine valve cover clearly says 4Y . Witch brings up some questions:
    1) Who in a sober state of mind would swap down from 4Y to 3Y?
    2) Can a 4Y head be fitted ton a 3Y block?
    3) Is the 200cc/ 0.2liter difference in the stroke or the bore?
    4) What else has to be messed with to make it work? ECU? injectors? wiring? vacuum and valves? sensors?.....
    5) Can the 4Y valve cover be mounted to the 3Y head?
    6) Is there some visual clues to identify a 3 or 4Y head?
    7) Is there some visual clues to identify a 3 or 4Y block?

Re: 4Y head on 3Y block?

Just asked my friend Google. The answer to#3 is: drum rrrrrrrroll... Bore. From 86mm in the 3Y up to 91mm in the 4Y. The stroke stay the same at 86mm. Therefore, if I'm not mistaken, the answer to #2 is No. Google had no clue about #1 Looks like I will be looking into used 4Y engine to do the conversion back .

    1) Who in a sober state of mind would swap down from 4Y to 3Y? ..anyone who's got a 3y and is trying to be resourceful. there's a 10% difference between new engines,, but a new 3Y has a ton more power than a dead 4Y
    2) Can a 4Y head be fitted ton a 3Y block? yes,, I've done it in the past.
    3) Is the 200cc/ 0.2liter difference in the stroke or the bore? ..looks like yew found the answer on that one.
    5) Can the 4Y valve cover be mounted to the 3Y head? definitely
    6) Is there some visual clues to identify a 3 or 4Y head? they're likely identical

Yes, 87 horses of a live 3Y sure beat 0hp from a dead 4Y but it wasn't lying around, it was sourced from "Foreign Engines Japanese Specialist" in Lynnwood WA. and in 1997 the 4Y wasn't that rare, I presume, but who knows? after a few beers... 4Y3Y4Y3Y4Y3Y
I have a hard time warping my head around the idea of a cylinder head chamber 5 mm wider than the cylinder itself unless they where totally flat? What happens to the combustion in the 2.5 mm "overhang"?
Meanwhile, I found a used, (not rebuild) 1990 4Y with only 88.000miles on it for $955.00 and free ship. Does that sound like a good deal to you guys? Bare in mind that I leave in Florida and the chances to find a van in a junk yard around here are about Zero.
And no; 1990 is not a typo. Did Toyota continued production and import of the engine (The road version not the industrial one) after discontinuing the van?

I believe the 4Y engine was used all the way up to 96' in the Toyota TownAce in Japan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and other countries. Most were the diesel version but there were petrol/gas versions out there too.

Yes, I believe the van and the Cresida where also imported one more year in Canada.
I just cannot get a straight answer from this vendor, except that they buy batches of motors at "certified or guarantied auctions" and of course the guy on the phone doesn't know sh... about the product he is trying to sale. 1990 Y4 at 88.000 miles sound good, $955,00 free ship: mmm...OK, so why do I feel I'm buying a dog from the puppy mil? Is it the terms of the worthless 3years unlimited miles warranty?

Re: 4Y head on 3Y block?

I was looking on line and saw a 1990 4Y for $829.00, free shipping, and 5 year warranty!! But who know how reputable the rebuilder is?

The last manufacture date for the Van is 12/89 so I'm thinking they'd consider it to be a 1990 model-

Re: 4Y head on 3Y block?

Yea! I have seen that one too but it doesn't mention the exact mileage, only how they determine "low mileage". The good thing is they are not rebuild, just compression tested and steam cleaned so chances are all the parts are still genuine Toyota parts. The bad thing is whether 3 or 5 years if you read the terms of the warranty, pretty much every thing that can go wrong with the engine will fall under the "over heating" blanket, regardless of the history of the engine.

Where do you go to fin these data's? that is cool.
