Toyota Van EFI 1986 MYSTERY??!!.. crank but won't start

So the van was running great and suddenly lost acceleration and had to pulled over. That day I made the Van start and run about half a mile but with the same problem of shutting down with acceleration... after I got home I could never make her start again so we replaced the gas pump, replaced sparks, check with another computer and nothing we also checked the air flow meter but it seems fine distributor as well... the van crank and you actually believe that is going to start because it feels like it but nothing... any suggestions or help please I'm trying to check or replaced the parts that can make this problem

I'd check for vacuum leaks next.

Are you sure that you have spark..?

It never fires at all..? Even a pop or two..?

Fuel, air and spark should yield fire.

You could always try a minimalist shot of ether...
I don't like using it myself, but as a diagnostic tool it is a quick way to rule out air and spark as variables.

    Did you do this?

    Replace your fuel filter.
    Check for vacuum leaks.
Check for a spark at all four cylinders.
Check your timing, while someone is cranking.
    Check your compression.

If your van has a tachometer installed on it it's easy enough to test the igniter, just check out this thread.

My van doesn't have a tachometer... I will try to find an igniter to test it... thanks for all the help

Sounds like still not getting any fuel.
    Can you check fuel pressure?

To me that's what it sounds like too, maybe a really bad fuel pressure regulator? Tim has a good article on how to test this here.

That was our first thought that's why the first thing was a new fuel pump but no :/ and we already checked the fuel pressure and everything is great, fuel is not the problem... I think the problem is with the igniter or the distributor...

I read that you changed the fuel pump but didn't see anything mentioned about the fuel pressure regulator or the actual fuel pressure numbers that it's putting out. Between 38-44 psi is the sweet spot for these vans, if the pressure is above or below that it could create the problems your having now but if you've checked all that then yea I'd go back to trying to source an igniter to test that.

Edit: if you can't source an igniter locally, I have one in a 89 van that I'm parting out here.

after replacing plugs and wires did you double check the firing order from cap to plug? sounds like it wants to run but is fighting itself???

Yes we checked that. We haven't done the pressure test but we're going to do it tomorrow but we did replace the regulator from one van I have for parts but I don't really know the condition... try to start it with start fluid and sounds like is going to start its really trying but nothing...

i dont know if this will help but i had the pretty much exact same kind of thing happen with my honda civic. it started kind of sputtering on the highway then died complete loss of power. dropped fuel tank and replaced fuel pump cause i was certian thats what it was, changed plugs, changed fuel filter changed distributor cap and rotor nothing worked. turned out to be the ignition coil. i would replace it asap before you go any further. mine was under the distributor cap when you take it off. was super easy to replace took me 5 min. and cast like 50 bucks. again this was on my honda but im assuming that its gonna be pretty much the same.

Re: Toyota Van EFI 1986 MYSTERY??!!.. crank but won't start

I agree with checking the coil, not only for spark but without spark the fuel pump wont run. if the coil is working intermittently I could see a situation of a little fuel and spark looking like the video you posted.
the coil IS under the cap easy to get to. and is fairly inexpensive.
Ive always been told coils don't fail, but ive had a couple fail including the one in the van I am currently driving ( I needlessly replaced the fuel pump before finding the faulty coil)
