Hey, had some of these engine bay prop hooks professionally cut out of 1/4" aluminum. Very sturdy. $20 shipped to the USA. PM me and I'll send you my PayPal info. Thanks!

That's nice and blingy!
Any pics of that installed and holding up the seat?

This is my old handmade one...
bump. got some more of these if anyone is interested.
These are awesome! I missed the first post on them. My van holder still works but if i ever get the other one ready to sell I'll be seeing if your strap is still available.
Very Cool, Captain!
I have a rather nice fabricated 1" square tube divider "of sorts" which was in my hiace when I bought it, so I just use a short Octopus Strap (we'll that what we call them in OZ - elastic luggage strap? you get it, I'm sure) permanently attached to the roof height cross bar to keep the engine "lid" up.
10/10 for your product though. I'll ask some of my Van mates and see if they're interested.
Cheers - Doc
I used a coat hanger for years to prop the hood. I got crafty one day and made a hook out of some scrap aluminium lying around. After showing it off on social media, there was enough interest that I started to make some extras, but after spending half an hour to finish one, I just had some professionally cut. The coathanger did the job but these are much nicer looking. Toyota discontinued the engine hood straps, and last I checked they were $45 (for 30 year old plastic). I've pulled a few of the plastic hooks form parts vans, but never really trusted them. Not sure if Toyota used the same plastic hooks for the Hiace or not.
I'm assuming you are in NZ, and if these worked in the Hiace and you know any TV owners near you that might be interested in these, you might want to pool your efforts and get them in bulk to save on shipping. It wouldn't be worth it for either of us to ship just one.
Hmm, not sure Cap. Mine doesn't have one nor does it have a screw hole as in your picture. I think the HiAce and LiteAce models just folded the passenger and middle seats right back so that they didn't need a hook. Though I'm not sure as mine came with the divider bars which stop the seats going right back. I just seem to remember helping a mate with his LiteAce and the seats folding right back near 180 degrees.
I'm in Australia actually, although Tasmania (my state) is probably more like what you think of when you think NZ than AUS.
I will definitely keep your idea in mind.
Cheers - Doc
Bump. Still have some of these for sale. PM me if interested.
Bump
Do yourself a favor and get one of these. I feel MUCH safer working on the van without a strained piece of plastic protecting my noggin!
These work! I assume it's you that I bought mine from through eBay. I had my van smogged and the very next time I had to open the engine bay, the plastic holder pretty much disintegrated and I felt lucky that it didn't crumble during the smog and whack the technician.
I'm too lazy for the other solutions out there, this was an easy fix!
Thanks for your patronage.
Here's a link that may make the ordering process easier.

still have some of these if y'all are interested.
Had one of these for a while now, spent more time priming and laying down three coats of ‘hammered black’ paint then it probably to took to make, package and send to me but every time I use it I smile. Works great.

Glad it's working out. I keep meaning to dip mine in Plastidip. There was actually a bit of prototyping and R&D with these, but you are right, it probably only takes a minute to cut one on the water jet. The first few I made by hand on a band saw, but it was too much work for the price point I was trying to achieve.

I shared this on my instagram, hopefully you get a few more sales. Thank you!

That smells like regular! She needs premium DUDE! PREMIUM!
Thanks BTW. I don't really do IG, but I've lurked around and seen lots of cool vans on there. Had a few people MSG me about the hooks. Got some more in stock if anyone is interested.
