What is this dangling sensor mounted below front of engine

I've got a 1993 Previa 2WD LE. After a week sitting in below 0 temps, the van showed erratic temp gauge swings from normal spot to just below red; the heat was intermittent although the temp gauge lowered to near normal when the heat did kick out. When I got home, the bottom coolant pipe was cool while the upper pipe was warm. Added some antifreeze too since the reservoir was on the low side. Decided to replace the thermostat, when down there I see this dangling connector -must have been tugged apart by hitting one of the many large twigs on the driveway.

Anyhow, the van is operating normally, temp gauge excepted. Does anyone know what this sensor is and if so, could it be responsible for the up and down temp gauge or was that just a coincidence?

    Thanks!

Yes, I was thinking something like that given the oil all over the cable. Seems to have busted at the cable, so I'll have to rig something up. Thanks for the confirmation!

Hi and welcome to TVT! . I believe that's "HOSE, AIR CLEANER, NO.1" Toyota part #17881-76070, but sadly it's discontinued and NLA. At this point your best bet would be checking with salvage yards. Tim

Can you pick the part up and shoot a pic of it somewhere better? It could be sasquatch for all I can see in that pic.

Re: The WHAT-IS-THIS-PART and WHAT-IS-THE-PART-NUMBER Thread for Previas

I'm not 100% certain but I think that is the wire which goes to the oil pressure switch which illuminates the oil pressure light (oil can symbol) on the dashboard.
Does your oil pressure light come on when you turn the ignition to the on position?

Below is a pic of the oil pressure sensor in the bottom of the engine on my '91 5 speed. It has a single spade connector coming out of it, but this may have been broken off if you have lost the central plastic engine undercover (which is feeble, easily ripped off, and hard to find replacements at scrap yards).
Sorry the photos are upside down - that's what happens when you're crawling around in the street during a SLC winter.

The rubber cover is long gone on mine, and I improvised a "break away" connector (basically an additional spade connection with the spade shortened so that the male part barely engages the female) so that I didn't keep breaking the tab off the sensor every time I went through bushes.

If your sensor is broken, many Toyotas use this same sensor and so they're readily available at scrap yards. Ask a Toyota dealer to do a cross reference for a more modern common car which uses the same sensor.

    What is this part?

I have a ‘97 Previa DX SC RWD.

I can’t find a vacuum switch on any of the parts diagrams. It is under the hood, mounted on the rear of the radiator. It is below the power steering reservoir, next to the fan. It is in front of the supercharger pulley and has 3-vacuum hoses and one electrical plug.

The hose that is able to hold vacuum slowly bleeds off and I think it could be the source of my vacuum leak. Anyone know what it is?

Re: The WHAT-IS-THIS-PART and WHAT-IS-THE-PART-NUMBER Thread for Previas

See if you can figure out what it's connected to (and better still, what it actually does). Either way, go to a Toyota dealer parts desk with the part number and photo. My suspicion would be that there's more than one other part available that's functionally equivalent - since most of these things are a valve that turns on or off with the application of +12V. It's obsolescence is likely more about its Previa-specific mounting hardware, in which case you could source a replacement valve and swap the bracket or jury-rig something to hold it in place.

Does anyone know the part number for the tensioner pulley for the supercharger belt?

    It’s small, about 2.5” OD, 7 grooves

I can’t find them listed anywhere on the internet :(

EDIT: found them (Idler Pulley no.2 16604a or 16604-76010) called SPRING (FOR IDLER PULLEY TENSION) even though there’s no spring involved.
