MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

    Hi there,

I've just got a Masterace Sport Surf Grand saloon with 2CT engine but it dosn't fire up...

She turns over on the key fine, I've replaced the glow plugs and checked they're getting the correct voltage (all good there)
Fresh Fuel, Also checked deisel is getting to the engine... might have turned her over with out the glowplugs in... a bit of spray then

Anyways this is where I've got to and she still doesn't fire up.. Any advice on where to look/ tinker with next?

I know before I got her she had been sat for a fair few years.

    Any thoughts thanks in advance,
    Jon

Have you tried bleeding the injectors?

Not yet I'll have a go and see how I get on.

Is there anything specific on this engine to look out for (with regards to bleeding the injectors) or would following a standard injector bleeding guide be fine?

    Cheers,

Still no luck, injectors bled, timing checked and correct. all vacuum hoses look fine..

I guess next would be compression test. Unless anyone has any other ideas..

Re: MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

So the test kit I bought doesn't seem to work as when cranking the needle bounces but doesnt hold a reading so thats getting returned and I'll have to wait again for another to arrive

I'll let yous know when I get a chance to test it. in the mean-time is there anything I'd be able to check over whilst waiting for this kit to arrive?

    Cheers

Re: MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

It's a diesel. Fuel and compression and it WILL start. You could unplug the glowplugs and give it a small shot of starting fluid(ether). If the glowplugs are not easy to disable you could let them cycle and then give them a couple minutes to cool down. You just don't want starting fluid going in there with the glowplugs hot. Check the oil too if you've been cranking it alot, it's possible to spray enough fuel in there to thin out the oil. If the oil seems excessively thin or smells heavily of diesel it can affect your ability to build enough compression and should be changed.

Awesome thanks for that. Wouldn't be surprised if the oil is too thin after you've mentioned that.

I will see what I can do with starting fluid also. Will update when I get a chance and also when the new comp tester arrives.

Also I feel the seller told me at one point he tried putting start fluid down the air inlet and the engine "tried", could that have screwed the engine if he'd left the glow plugs in?

    Cheers

could that have screwed the engine if he'd left the glow plugs in?
Just to be clear, the glowplugs should physically be left in. You just don't want any electrical current going to them. Depending on the system, that could be simply pulling a fuse or unplugging the controller. If starting fluid is ignited by a hot glowplug when the engine has not completed the compression stroke it can kick back violently and potentially cause damage. This is also why I say to use a little. Too much will cause it to ignite before the compression stroke is complete. Start with a 1/2 second shot. You can always increase the amount if it doesn't fire and try again.

Re: MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

Okay so tried with some easy start and it definately fired breifly,

guessing this means I have compression. at least in one cylinder

it now turns quicker once the fuel is hooked up but still doest completely fire and run without the starter. I guess I should clean out the injectors next. Thats my next thought..

I'll also be doing a proper compression test when the new tester arrives.

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Okay, new problem

So new tester has arrived but my starter has decided to pack in. I took it out tested it an sure enough the solenoid is popping it out but the gear isnt spinning.
so ordered new starter and just have to wait on that now. then will test compression and in the meantime - see if I can clean out the injectors.

    Wow...another "Surf" 2CT with a starter problem.
I am here in Florida and having trouble finding a starter. Can I inquire where you found one? My starter is a 28100-64100. 1990 MasterAceSurf Turbo Diesel 4WD and i believe its a 1.4kW starter.

    Cheers

Re: MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

    BTW

I replaced the contacts and plunger(?) but still have trouble. I am getting tired of rolling to a pop clutch start and found that if I roll in gear and then turn the key the starter it will work. Could be the armature and want to replace it but can not seem to find replacement parts in the states. Any link would help.

Re: MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

My Starter was a 28100-64040 2kw which also seems to be what is listed as the correct kw for the 2CT 4WD Auto (i have an auto) (I also found my replacement on ebay, which does particularly help you)

http://www.townace.plus.com/aanswers.htm townace.plus has some good points and also the part number for the blueprint equivilent: ADT31227

I also find this website helps to find out part numbers:
    https://www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dl...0g-pqzx-913857

Also I find Yoyopart to be really good for finding alternative interchangable parts:
    https://www.yoyopart.com/oem/6992735...810064100.html

As for stateside parts i'm not sure as I'm in the UK but someone else on here might be able to help out with at?

    Hope this helps.

Re: MasterAce 2CT Turns over but won't start

    Just got her started!!!!

So happy after cleaning the injectors, oil and filter change, new glow plugs, new starter moter it fired!! and runs

However now I have a strange knocking sound. Thinking it may possibly be valve clearence but not completely sure it's that.
How easy is it to change the valve clearence on a 2ct?

Any thoughts if it could be anything else or how to go about changing the clearence?

Here's a video of it also:

    Cheers guys!

Mine smoked like a chimney when I first drove it around...I was told to run a can of Seafoam in the tank and it is good to go. Perhaps that will clean out the "cobwebs".
