    Steering Gear Housing (gear box)

    Hello everyone,

I have a leak in my ‘84 manual 2wd steering gear housing (gear box). I’m thinking to replace it and get a rebuilt one or would changing only the gasket be ok?
Also I couldn’t find any threads here how can I remove it, can someone help me.

Use the search function for "steering bevel gear".
This is a Toyota recall issue. I had mine replaced by a Toyota dealership for free back in 2010 (IIRC).
    Hope this helps. Good luck!

I do believe the 84/85 used steering box with centre link and idler arm, no bevel gear in play.

Unless you are experiencing a leak (more than just seepage) &/or excessive play, I would likely leave it be.

Boxes can be rebuilt and likely your best choice if you do need to action it.
Used might be an option, if you can locate one.

    thank you Burnboot and Trestlehed.

'84 are using steering gear boxes, I removed it today and I'm planning to rebuild it. I took couple of pics so I will post them here later.

    thank you!
