    Engine Porn

I just finished my latest engine build. It's going in my 87 un-cut cargo van. Check it out :

As always Tim, nice work. It looks amazing! Where did you source the aluminum valve cover?

    Re: Engine Porn

Lol, good eye. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice. It's for a forklift. Let's just say I know a guy with connections, a guy with an employee discount who asked not to be named. If not for that, I probably wouldn't have gotten it as Toyota industrial equipment parts are expensive and hard to get. Unless you also know somebody or get lucky on eBay, it would need to sourced through a Toyota industrial equipment dealer like https://shop.toyotaforklift.com and would probably be a back-order item. You will also need special mounting bolts, copper crush washers and also an oil fill cap (normal van oil caps are not interchangeable). Here are the part numbers:

Toyota #11201-78150-71 Aluminum valve cover (for forklift)
Toyota #81551-76050-71 Flange bolts for aluminum valve cover (2 required)
Toyota #81551-76034-71 Flange bolt for aluminum valve cover (1 required)
Toyota #90430-08950-71 Copper crush washer for aluminum valve cover flange bolts (3 required)
Toyota #11291-78160-71 Toyota 4YECS valve cover sticker
Toyota #12180-76010-71 Oil fill cap (1 required)

Unlike the stamped steel covers, the aluminum cover has mount bolt stand-offs cast right into it. These stand-offs are precision machined at the correct height so they hit the rocker arm assy just as the VC gasket achieves the correct compression. This allows you to torque the bolts to spec without over stressing the VC gasket or the valve cover. So it's not only pretty to look at, it's also a nice upgrade, but probably not worth the ~$250.00 price tag. Tim

When I saw all the shiny parts I thought forklift motor upgrades but I thought way more then just the valve cover.

    Re: Engine Porn

The head was also marketed as a forklift head. I got it from a forklift parts supply business. I'm pretty sure it's a Chinese reproduction. I got the one without valves or any other parts then got the valves, etc and built it up. It was visually and dimensionally identical to the original van head except it only had one 3/8" NPT hole in the very front where the sensors go. I took it to a machine shop and had them put (2) 16 mm sensor holes next to the 3/8" hole.

So other than the head and the valve cover all other parts were marketed as van parts. And yes, there are a lot of 35 year old parts there that I spent a lot of time cleaning and painting. I went so far as to sand blast the top intake manifold, but wasn't happy with the sheen, so I ended up painting it. I'm installing this engine today and taking the van to work tomorrow . Tim

Wowza!!! That thing is sparkling pretty much, nice job! Also about the forklift engine thing, I read recently that these vans had a forklift engine in them, I would've never thought the parts for the dedicated forklift motor parts were interchangeable as someone pointed out the valve cover but that is pretty unique!! My van's motor (and transmission, and some other stuff related to the power train, and the body and everything) will probably need some rebuilding down the line as the most recent oil change last week had some metal confetti in it which isn't too nice, but damn you did a good job tim! Man I'd love to see some pictures of that in your van!

I just got the old engine out, washed the engine bay, then came in for a break. I'm going back out now to drop the new engine in. I'll take some pics. Tim

    Re: Engine Porn

Here are some before and after pics of my cargo van's engine bay. I've put ~ 100 miles on it so far and it runs awesome . I'm going out now to change oil and then going on a job ~ 50 miles away. The van had a lot of problems before, but now it's fun to drive again. I'm really starting to like it now.

    Re: Engine Porn

I'm loving it. It just hit 500 miles today since I installed it. It's almost a little spooky because I keep expecting some sort of issue, but there have been zero problems. I got the van at auction ~ 6 years ago (THIS POST). It ended up sitting for ~ 5 years but then my work van got totaled last July and I needed something right away. So I started using this, but the compression in #4 got so bad it quit firing. So I've been driving it the last couple thousand miles on 3 cylinders. It also was burning ~ a quart of oil every 100 miles & had a bad exhaust leak. The clutch was also starting to slip, so I took care of all those things in a single weekend. It's the difference of night and day & a joy to drive.......which is a good thing because it's my daily driver. Tim

Very nice, I’ve been waiting a long time to see this one up and going, are you still rolling the 240z rims?

    Re: Engine Porn

The 15" 240SX rims are off the van currently. I will likely get some load range 102 Tires for those rims, but for now I'm using the 14" alloy rims that were used on the Celicas and the original 84 LE vans. FYI, I have used other alloy rims on my work vans before, but they are not heavy duty enough and eventually crack. I'm not sure how the 240SX rims will do, but I have put ~ half a million miles on these Toyota alloys with no issues. Tim

That is some very sweet engine porn. Noticed the cast valve cover right away LOL. Imagine all those little vacuum lines actually working instead of being plugged or looped (oops did I say that out loud).

It really does look great, Tim, nice work!

this may be stated somewhere else in the forum, but will the 4Y the long blocks available on eBay swap directly in to an '88 van?
