87' Van catalytic converter stock location

Hi all, 87' toyota van 4x4 auto trans. Just failed CA smog because the catalytic converter has the wrong serial number on it, and it is in the wrong location. It actually did pass emissions.

Cat was changed in AZ at some point, the number on it is not CA compliant. Tec also said it is in the wrong location. It is just forward of the rear wheel, he said it should be just behind the front wheel. Something about heating up faster that way and functioning better. Can anyone confirm the original stock location of the cat? FSM does not show location unfortunately. Thanks very much!

Yeah it is near the front wheel, right after the piece of exhaust that merges the two pipes into one. There is some kind of heat shield above it mounted to the floor.
(I found this out after I accidentally removed the catalytic convertor. I mixed and matched exhaust pieces from different toyota models, to replace mine. I found some that formed an almost perfect replacement, except that after mounting it, the catalytic convertor was still on my garage floor )

Thanks for your reply. I had a good experience with the muffler shop actually, super nice dude. Literally the only diagram he could find of the exhaust system oddly enough was for a choice between a 2.0 and 2.2 L engine. No choice between 2WD and 4WD. He was sure all of the pipes from the motor are original, so he guessed it was because of the transfer case on the 4WD. He really thought it belonged in the rear. Seemed plausible, and I couldn't prove him wrong.

Catalytic was installed an hour later and back for a re-test on the smog. The tech said in needed to have been moved forward, like he told me. I told him what the muffler guys said, and he got on his computer. I know he's not going to be able to find a diagram, so he can't prove me wrong. By now he just wants me out of there, so takes the number off the new cat, all good, CA legal. And legal. I hope Lenno's law passes. Thanks!

Doesn't that bill require them to be insured as a collector vehicle to qualify for exemption?

There is senate bill 712, commonly referred to as Leno's law. Registering it as a collector car is one part of the bill, yes, but it hasn't passed yet unfortunately. The most recent vote on it was April 28th. It was strange actually, there was a call for any support and the whole room was silent, then there was a call for anyone against it, and of course some guy got up complaining that it would somehow cost the state money. Because the state government simply cannot get enough of your money.. But I digress. It was sent for additional review so it has not passed or failed yet. I don't know when the next vote on it will be.

    https://trackbill.com/bill/californi...ption/2671682/

SB 712, as amended, Grove. Smog check: collector motor vehicles: exemption. Existing law establishes a motor vehicle inspection and maintenance (smog check) program that is administered by the Department of Consumer Affairs. The smog check program requires inspection of motor vehicles upon initial registration, biennially upon renewal of registration, upon transfer of ownership, and in certain other circumstances. Existing law exempts specified vehicles from being inspected biennially upon renewal of registration, including, among others, all motor vehicles manufactured prior to the 1976 model year. Existing law also exempts from specified portions of the smog test, both biennially and at transfer, a collector motor vehicle that is insured as a collector motor vehicle, is at least 35 model years old, complies with the exhaust emissions standards for that motor vehicle’s class and model year as prescribed by the department, and that passes a functional inspection of the fuel cap and a visual inspection for liquid fuel leaks. This bill would delete the above partial smog check exemption for collector motor vehicles from existing law. Instead, the bill would fully exempt a collector motor vehicle from the smog check requirement, both biennially and at transfer, if the vehicle is at least 35 model years old. The bill would be known, and may be cited as, Leno’s Law.
