The WHAT-IS-THIS-PART and WHAT'S-THE-PART-NUMBER Thread for US Toyota Vans 1984-1989
i saw this pic and tried to compare it from my van, and i think some parts of my van is missing, can someone tell me where do the these (orange arrows) tubes go?... and what is this (red arrow) square? thanks
-
Re: help please
The vacuum lines go to your power steering air valve. This is a device on your power steering pump. It's sole purpose in life is to slightly increase your idle speed when you crank the wheels hard (helps prevent stalls due to the load of the power steering when cranking steering hard while at idle speeds). The little black box (red arrow) is the connection point for the big + wire from the alternator. Tim

Re: help please
now i know, thank you very much sir Tim for that... :)

Re: help please
sir Tim, do you have any picture of that air valve in the PS pump?.... thanks

Re: help please
-thanks sir Tim for the picture, i checked my PS pump, there's no hole for the air control valve, i think it was replaced already... thanks again sir... :)

Re: help please
-our van's engine has an ISC valve, when does this operate or turn on?

unknown button for me, help...
-on the driver's side (door armrest), we have the master switch for the power windows and the power locks, mine has a missing button, between the power lock switch and power window switch, what is it for?
-
Re: unknown button for me, help...
I believe that button is to disable the passenger side lock/window controls (I could be wrong). That particular button in my van is missing as well, but the PO had soldered a bridge between that circuit so that the passenger side works.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. :)
-
Re: unknown button for me, help...
-mine is just a hole but with no solder to bridge, the passenger side power window still works... what could it be?
-
Re: unknown button for me, help...
I looked into it and checked the owners manual. :LOL2:
1986 Toyota Van Owners Manual (I don't imagine it would be too different from an '89 manual.)
Page 51
"When the "P/W LOCK" switch is pushed in or the "WINDOW" switch is in the "LOCK" position, none of the windows, except the driver's window, can be raised or lowered."
You can view the manual here. Hope that helps. :dance2:

Mystery connector
Does anybody know what the green 2-wire connector goes to? It's in the bundle of 3 harnesses: TPS harness, O2 sensor harness + this Green connector. This bundle of 3 are all about the same length. I do not see anything that this green connector can connect to.
The van in question is an '88 LE, auto 4wd.
Thanks

Re: Mystery connector
88 - 89 vans that were originally sold in California had stricter emission requirements than vans sold in the other 49 states. Vans sold in CA had different ECUs, a slightly different engine wire harness, and an EGR temp sensor. It looks like your van has the CA harness and quite possibly the CA ECU. That wire with the green end goes to the EGR temp sensor which is probably missing from your engine.
You could try to find that sensor or you could find a non-CA ECU (assuming yours is a CA one) and forget about it. The other option would be to just let it hang, but your "check engine light" would most likely illuminate and your ECU would display a code #71 while in the diagnostic mode. Tim

Blue plug under passenger side dash?
Hi all,
I'm Josh, I have an '86 2wd TV that was given to me after I brought it back to life. It's running pretty doggone well right now with the exception of some cold start issues that I'm going to troubleshoot this weekend.
Unrelated to that -I think- is this thing that I found under the passenger side front dash today (see attachment). It's a blue connector, at least three fairly large-gauge blue wires on one side, several other wires of varying gauge and color, too. Before I start scouring the service manual, anyone have any idea to what this is supposed to connect? Some accessory that I don't have? As far as I can tell, everything in the van works okay.
Thanks in advance!
Josh

Re: Blue plug under passenger side dash?
I'm pretty sure that's your Passenger side door harness. The wires it holds are for power windows, power locks, and the little red courtesy light in the door panel (none of which would work with that thing unplugged). Another possibility is the doors were replaced with non-powered ones and the harness is left over??? Tim
-
Re: Blue plug under passenger side dash?
Well- the van has manual windows and no power locks, but I'm fairly certain that the doors haven't been swapped. I don't know, anything's possible, but the interior trim panels are the same, the locks are the same, everything looks pretty original.
I'll do a little investigating tomorrow and see what can be seen. I'll write down the wire colors and look at the FSM to see what can be deduced.
Thanks!
Josh

Re: Blue plug under passenger side dash?
Why, its the HISTORY ERASER HARNESS!! what ever you do don't jumper the 2 main wires!! lol
-
Re: Blue plug under passenger side dash?
Tim is correct, it is the plug for all the powered goodies in the door.
-
Re: Blue plug under passenger side dash?
so, If one were to find power everything front doors they would plug right in? that would be kinda cool....
-
Re: Blue plug under passenger side dash?
I'm not sure about the doors, but Toyota is typically very frugal when it comes to prepping for options. If the van never had powered doors I'm surprised they even have the connector there. I wouldn't count on the harness or circuit being complete. Tim

mystery clutch line part: please identify
Help! (please) on my 1989 4WD with manual transmission the line goes from the master to the slave cylinder (for the clutch) but stops behind the front bumper and goes in to (and comes out of) the opposite sides of a little pill bottle shaped thing with a bleeder screw on the top. That thing looks like aluminum and it is split and leaking. It is bolted to a bracket that is bolted to the back of the bumper. What is it? Does anyone have a part number or a description of what it does? Can I just replace it with a union? I am stuck and unable to drive as the fluid is pouring and out and shifting is fast becoming impossible. I pump to raise pressure and shift but the fluid leaks. This will end badly soon. Cheers, Bill

Re: myster clutch line part: please identify
I don't understand why Toyota did this. There's a crazy long power steering line too (for no apparent reason). I would cut that thing out and put a union there. Tim
-
Re: myster clutch line part: please identify
Thanks Tim.
Will do. Bleeding will be awful, of course.
Cheers,
Bill

what are these sensors?
Attachment 792
sorry for the not so great image.. but there are two sensors (or switches) here...I hope they are visible. Not exactly sure what they are or what they connect to (seems like they go into injectors?)... I notice mine seem lose/old and when fiddled with the engine stutters.
Thanks
-
Re: what are these sensors?
If you're talking about the tan plastic cap with 2 wires, that's the injector connector. There are 4 of them and they supply power to the injectors so the engine will run :)>:. If the engine starts to miss when you mess with them, then don't mess with them :wnk:. Actually, messing with them shouldn't make the van run bad unless the connectors are messed up. After 20 something years they get baked and start to go bad. They may need to be replaced. The front 2 aren't too bad, but the back two are a major PITA. Hopefully those ones are still okay. Tim

Re: myster clutch line part: please identify
We cut it off, converted to American and joined the lines. 8000k later all seems well.

Re: myster clutch line part: please identify
8 months after repair. No issues. I claim we have a good solution.

Pipe/hose insulation
I'm not sure what this part is but looks like I need to replace it... I'm trying to figure out what this hose is called so I can order a new one. The top crusty looking one. If you have the name and part number that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!
oh this is for the 4X4 van I wants sure if it different in the 2WD thank you
-
Re: Pipe/hose insulation
If you peal that crusty stuff off it will look better. Not sure why Toyota thought that stuff was necessary. It's your power steering pump return line. I think Toyota still sells these, but they are over $100 now. I finally quit buying this hose from them and switched to a non molded 5/8" ID hydraulic hose. If you go this route, be sure it's rated for hydraulic fluid as a heater hose is not likely to hold up well. Any hydraulic shop can sell this in bulk. If you really want Toyota, it's part #44348-28040. MSRP is $139.00, but it can be had for around $100 at one of those discount Toyota parts internet sites (then they'll nail you for shipping :wall:). Tim

Re: Pipe/hose insulation
Yes that's very pricey. Thank you for the quick reply and detailed information.

Re: Some pictures of my weekend project
what is this? what does it do? I'm rebuilding an 85 van and some pats are missing , I have most everything figured out , but cannot figure out what this hot wire goes toAttachment 1696
-
Re: Some pictures of my weekend project
It's what we call your "plus box" or + box. It's a junction where your big alternator wire connects to the van wire harness. I know for a fact that it's there on all 86 - 89 vans, but since I don't have any 84 - 85 vans I can't say for certain they have that. Perhaps Llamavan or somebody else with the earlier models will chime in. Tim
-
Re: Some pictures of my weekend project
thanks for the info, makes perfect sense. I do have a white hot wire that goes there, just didn't know how it connected to the alt. . should have all parts ordered by the end of the week, then time for just a little body work and paint, then start customizing interior! I will post more pics as I go. this is a great sit very informative, glad to see that there is a following for the toyota van, this is my first toyota van so very excited about the whole project, just should have happened before summer (in Florida)!!!

Identify these things for me?? Pretty please?
Attachment 2116 The RED circled doohickie is broken.. I guess I looked at it wrong :) I'd like to know what these things are, as I can't seem to find the place to identify them in my owner's manual.
Attachment 2117Also, if the (Return?) hose from the PS pump can be relocated, it might help in reduce the crimping of these wires where I've placed little red X's :D Were these vans built with the hose run along this route?

The one on the left won't make much difference this time of year (has to do with the pressure-up system for hot soak issues). Tim
