BRAKE CHECK

I just started to check brake calipers and pads on Bloodog, my 92
and found the drivers caliper was sticking. I found a few problems right off the bat...

Drivers side hardware was being pinched into the outer brake

While the right side hardware was loosely on the right outer brake pad
I’m not sure which is correctly mounted on anymore but there’s more free movement of brake shoe when the hardware is set up loosely as on the right side
I continue to dig in and...

After checking the left side caliper, I found the caliper boot was old, loosely fitting, and torn...

even the bore seal was failing and the elements were definitely penetrating into cylinder

After I Popped out the piston I found a problem there too...so
I’ll take everything apart, clean, and inspect everything while needed parts are ordered.
I went on Rock Auto and ordered brake caliper kits and rear wheel cylinder kits
Surprisingly they’re still available and pretty darn affordable. Went ahead and ordered extra set of each just in case need and/or go unavailable ... Although these have lasted so very long...I’ll put the extra sets in parts bin...
anyone still attempting to rebuild anymore? I find it rewarding as much as challenging...

the square piston seal was just barely doing its job. Wouldn’t last much longer... it’s gets a workout and is critical seal!

The other rubber sleeves have really held up good Too. A little fresh brake fluid and they are gouud
to go...

Rebuilding/reusing is ethically admirable too. My MO is to have a small supply of spare wear-prone parts on hand, salvaged from scrap yards. The scrap yard parts ^usually^ work if you're selective in pulling them. It means you have the opportunity to quickly replace, and then rebuild the original bad part at your leisure. I finally replaced a sticking caliper last fall with a scrap yard part. Disassembly of the old caliper revealed that the square-cut rubber piston seal was worn out. Installed new seal and that one is good to go again for when the next failure happens.

Well I opened up the right side And well without saying it was
same shape... needing attention...

the boot was not torn, definitely sealing ... rusty moisture!
