So I had the brake pads in my 89 Townace replace with some Raybesto pads, it's been less then 5000 miles and they already sound squeaky and very dusty. More like Raydusto!!! These were the premium pads too, has anyone had any experience with these pads?

If the shop didn't use shims and/or fittings, this can be a problem. Even if they did everything right, sometimes new brakes will carry-on like this until they break-in. Brake dust will also be the heaviest during break-in. Drive it through a couple tanks full of gas and re-evaluate. If it's still squeaking then I'd inspect their work. Personally I don't use aftermarket brake pads. I only use Toyota pads & shims, but even then sometimes they'll squeal during the first couple hundred miles (during break-in). Tim
Thank you Tim for the quick reply, I think they said they would reuse the shims and hardware if they were in good condition after inspection but I'm gonna have to ask them again. I was gonna use OEM pads for it but at the time wasn't able to crosses reference the part number at the time so I contacted a parts importer and that's what I got. I've done some research and it looks like the 89 U.S. van pads will fit. But the shims???? I did try to order those for my 87' 4x4 and they come up as NLA. Are you using a aftermarket shim kit? Thx
I'm still using Toyota pads & shims, but I have my own parts inventory. I run a parts & service business & those tendencies spill over onto my Toyota Van hoarding. Any parts that I know will be routinely needed (like brake pads, shims, calipers, etc) I have multiples on hand. Most of this I've had for over 10 years, so I'm not as affected by NLA parts. Of course it's just a matter of time before I feel the same crunch everybody else does. Tim

I went to Canada to pick up those pads from a parts importer but there were no part numbers on the box so I took it to Oriellys but they don't carry Raybesto brand anymore.

Sorry, I have no way to look things up from non US markets. I can sometimes cross reference part numbers, but I need a part number to do that. When you own something weird you need to have your own parts books/catalogs. Every time you figure out another part number write it down and record where you got it. I would contact people that have been helpful in the past and ask them where to get parts lists/catalogs. Perhaps you could find a forum for these in a country where they were sold. Those guys would likely be your best resource (assuming you speak their language). Tim

Looks like that part number was superseded by part #04465-28290. This part number shows up as still available through Toyota, but you won't know for sure (if it's available) until you're holding in your hand. I've noticed that Toyota likes to play games with brake pad part numbers. There are many pads that are interchangeable, but Toyota has many different part numbers. I believe they do this to make it harder for aftermarket companies to compete. When rigs get older and demand goes down, they usually switch over to a single part number (thus the reason for these parts to be superseded by other numbers). Tim

I'm partial to OE Toyota pads, but I'm okay with aftermarket calipers, shims, and fittings. Looks like you can still get these from Rockauto.com: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/t...+shim+kit,1740. You can also get the "fully loaded" calipers: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/t...b,caliper,1704 then just swap out the AM pads with Toyota pads.
Anymore, it seems as though I can only get through 2 sets of pads before one or the other caliper starts dragging and/or needs to be replaced. So if you don't know the last time your calipers were replaced, and/or you're getting irregular wear, it might be time to replace everything up there. Tim

I've read through this thread. All the part numbers for cross referencing confused me. My question is, can I put pads, calipers,and rotors from a local auto parts store/rock auto/dealer on my 87 JDM 4WD master ace? Thanks
My Townace is a 2WD Petrol 3YEU engine and not 4WD Diesel 2C/2CT like most of the members have. So the part numbers are pertaining to a 2WD van.

Looks like OEM pads are NLA for both 2WD and 4WD vans but if you click on the link Tim provided in posting number 11, there’s some closeout 4WD drive pads for under $4.00 and that might be an inexpensive way to experiment if they’re compatible.
I would assume that 4WD pads would work but I haven’t done any investigation or confirmation, if you happen to find out please post your results.

I looked up the OEM part number 04491-28080 and this part works for both YR30 and CR30 chassis according to the cross referencing, and that was the same the same scenario for when I looked up the pads for my 2WD van when I was looking for pads.
