Need to Smog but I have Funny smelling exhaust

Hey I think I may need to change my Catalytic Converter. I am due for a smog and I was thinking before I go I should change the converter. The exhaust smells funky like something is burnt. Hoping its just the converter because the van runs great. Temperature is great just need to smog.

Cat's don't just die, something takes them out, be it running rich or lean, burning oil among 10 thousand other things.
Even if the cat is toast, replacing it is only a temporary band-aid, unless you sort out the WHY, you'll be changing it out again real soon.

Start with checking codes, then go through an appropriate diagnosis.

This assumes that there isn't a plastic bag stuck to the exhaust and slowly melting/burning.

The other option is run it through smog as is, maybe it will pass, maybe it won't but at least then you'll know what your up against as the numbers generated will provide some insight into what's going on.
