    A/C Issue

The A/C on my 92 doesn't work. The light comes on and you can hear the extra rattle from the clutch engaging on the compressor pulley (bad SAD bushings that will be replaced soon).

But it blows warm, and after a little bit the light on the A/C goes out on its own (button still depressed, fan still on).

I do need to check the air coming out of the unit for the rear, but I can't imagine it's any different.

Does se this sound like a low charge of freon? I'd probably go with a RedTek refill kit if so. Or is it likely something else? I tried searching but didn't find anything.

    Re: A/C Issue

My buddy is an A/C guy, and he had gauges to read the R12 pressure in the system. It was a bit low.

He had some R12 substitute called Freeze 12. We put a can in, and it started to blow cold. Down to in the 40s on recirc.

So while that's all good, the light on the A/C button still blinks rather than staying on. And the middle position on the fan speed selector only works on low and high. Not the middle speed. Not sure if it is related.

the light blinks because the fan switch is bad

but freeze 12 is garbage and you should've never put that crap in the van to begin with.... mixing refrigerants is also illegal... no shop will dare touch your van's A/C if they find out it's not R12... it will destroy their recovery machines... it is also illegal for anyone to vent this stuff to the atmosphere... since I bet you didn't install the proper freeze 12 retrofit service valves in your van, as required by EPA to prevent cross contamination with specific refrigerants, your A/C system is now also illegal

you should have either stick to R12 or convert to R134a, which are manufacturer approved... despite common myths, a properly converted R134a system performs just as well as the original R12... Toyota has specific instructions for proper conversion

but too late for this now since you didn't do your research

I know this is an old thread, but in case it's helpful there is a Toyota Service Bulletin for R-12 Air Conditioner System retrofit that includes the '86-'89 Van at http://tms.cleanautoalliance.org/documents/ac002t98.pdf
