Post Big hose on auto rear cylinder plate

Anybody know what the big(ger) coolant hose on the 4wd auto rear cylinder plate does?

I couldn't find anything on it in the cooling section of the FSM, but it looks like it runs to a ring around the oil filter adapter. Obviously the transmission is the likely candidate, but the routing to the oil filter has me wondering. I'm thinking about replacing the HOD plate with a forklift flat plate. Running some kind of electric heater to the TB seems like it should solve any freezing problems; something along the lines of what some of the Ford guys running Clifford intakes without a water channel are doing, but definitely need to figure out the bigger hose first.

That's what is known as a sandwich oil cooler. The coolant circulates around the oil going to and from the filter and removes some of the oils heat to the cooling sytem. Other types of filter sandwich plates provide the means to plumb for oil flow to and from a tube and fin or plate style oil cooler mounted elsewhere on the vehicle. Typically near the radiator.

Cool, thanks for the reply. That's what it looked like, but I couldn't figure out why an auto would need one and a manual wouldn't. Based on that it seems like closing everything off with a forklift rear plate is a definite option now that both piped plates are NLA.

Yeah. Getting one machined like in that thread was my first thought. I hit 7 different machine shops in the Dallas area and the closest I got was 'we can't weld aluminum.' At that point I decided figuring out another option might be a good plan for the future.

It wouldn't have to be aluminum, the original was steel. The problem I've found with fabrication machine shops(at least in my area)is they don't seem to want to do little jobs. At my old job we used to take in obsolete parts to local shops and it seemed like everything was $500 didn't matter how small. I took my spare tire carrier to one recently and he just plainly told me it wasn't worth his time even after I told him I may be interested in a quantity of 50. Same as the plastics fabricator 3 years ago with my fan shroud. Maybe it's time to start manufacturing the replacement parts I keep thinking of. Tubular upper control arms with replaceable ball joints, heater hose plates, spare tire carriers......
